    Bp/w

Wow, you're going to get a lot of advice. This is one of the most controversial topics on here. A Stainless Steel Back Plate is about 6 lbs, so you if you go Stainless you'll have that much taken care of. A single steel tank will also add some weight, so that is also a great way to re-weight...

VIP on two steel 120's gone bad!!!

Hummm, interesting comment from a PADI MSDT... You can train for Nitrox along with Open Water and since it's not an 'in water' skill, it doesn't add substantially to the skills mastery or to the information overload. IMHO, this is well within the bounds of practicality even from dive one...

Convert Dive Rite Transpac II to BP/W

Another suggestion to lower the tank is to loosen the shoulder straps, lower the waist belt and tighten the crotch strap. Sometimes if you tighten the shoulder straps first, it gets everything riding higher then you want it. I've had that happen with mine. Worth a try at any rate... :)

    Running with Scissors

I'm not sure, that's what I'm about to find out. I'm hoping they are open to at least considering the opinions of the instructors out there. One of the main issues (I think) is "Is it defensible in court?" Unfortunately, in our society, especially here in the US, that is a very important...

    class syllabus

There is an overall standard that many agencies comply with, the RSTC. World Recreational Scuba Training Council I don't know if the standard is published.

    Running with Scissors

I appreciate you comments. I haven't taught a cavern course in a year or so and usually check for updates and go over the standards prior to teaching the class. My comments were as of last time I checked and included PADI's ongoing issue with not being able to get my mailing address correct so I...

    An Attempt at Understanding DIR

I'm not putting words in your mouth; I'm pointing out that the DIR configuration isn't the ONLY one around. Yes, I know Jim. I did my IANTD co-teaches with him and I did my deep dive training with him. He is one of the safest divers I know. If you trained with Jim, you were trained (as was I)...

    An Attempt at Understanding DIR

Nor is it the best/only way to dive safely in technical diving. Folks like Bill Main, Wes Skiles, Woody Jasper, Lamar Hires, et-al, were diving safely long before a reporter doing a story about the WKPP coined the term 'DIR' and long before JJ even knew what cave diving was. Those folks are...

    200 vs 300 bar manifold

True enough, these days, although I do have an older Thermo 200 BAR manifold that's rated at the lower pressure.

    200 vs 300 bar manifold

Yoke connectors won't fit on 300 BAR manifolds. Get the 200 BAR!

    An Attempt at Understanding DIR

The OP, in his original post, said he was trying to understand why DIR folks didn't seem to think it was 'safe' to dive with others trained differently. My post spoke directly to that point.

    An Attempt at Understanding DIR

So, does that mean a dive with Bill Main would be unsafe? Actually, the configuration was originated by Bill Main, William Hograth Main, to be precise. DIR literature tends to miss that point. In a recent post on TDS, JJ freely admitted using Bill's configuration, praised Bill and went on to...

Long hose for a new diver

For the set-ups I use in training we have 40" hoses on the primary, that being the 'known working' regulator that I teach students to donate. If you choose to donate your octo, then a 36" or 40" hose on that and a 26" hose (I believe it is) on the primary. Bruce

    Running with Scissors

Thanks, Andy, No, I hadn't seen those changes... another PADI issue, they were mailing to my street address, which I don't get mail at, instead of my PO Box. I never got the quarterlies or the Manual-on-CD for 2006 or 2007. Fortunately, I've been meeting all those standards including the...

    Running with Scissors

I don't disagree with your evaluation of him as a person. If you haven't read the recent exploits on the web you should (married a (maybe) golddigger, cut his kids out of the will, when asked what he saw in new wife his answer was 'Oh, just ho*n*y, I guess, any more questions?" Well, if I make...

    Running with Scissors

Sorry if I wasn't clear, what I meant was that I felt PADI's teaching of the buddy system was incomplete. I felt that avoidance and problem solving should be stressed far more as part of the buddy system. The 'use intellect to avoid having to use your skills' thing! I also felt thinking through...

Long hose for a new diver

Dan, I teach with the Rite Source, an OEM version of the Air2. My students don't have trouble with it. It is not designed for extended use and is not comfortable for extended use but it is appropriate for emergency use, even by new divers. Two negative issues are: Your can't turn your...

Yellowmask, Again, thanks for coming in and commenting. As has been also mentioned by others, you seem to be very clear in your view of things. In an aside, Yellowmask, you might enjoy reading "The Darkness Beckons" by Martyn Farr. Not that that particular type of diving might appeal to...

    Running with Scissors

AndyNZ, Thanks for your input. I agree that 'problem avoidance' is better then ‘intervention’ any day of the week. My flight instructor phrased it like this: Using your excellent intellect to avoid situations that would require you excellent skill I think that is part...

    Oxycheq El Cheapo II

I'd suggest not for 2 reasons It wears out the sensor much faster The greater the offset, the greater the error. Calibrate with a known gas source as close to the PPO2 your testing as you can find. That's my 2 cents. BTW, thanks, DA, I wasn't aware that Patrick was selling an add-on...
