    IPO/IPE considerations

Feel free to edit the title. I raised this topic because a circular was sent round our club about IPO and although what it said was correct and a lot of significant information. Also a very experienced and competent instructor who assumed I would not know about IPO started giving me a bit of a...

    IPO/IPE considerations

How much do divers need to know about IPO and the factors that contribute to it. Why even at quite advanced recreational SCUBA is so little taught about WOB and the effects of F = ma (Newtons second law) on lung stress.

Looking for help for person scared by Discover Scuba experience

I suggest that a discover scuba dive should never be done from a boat, only from a gently sloping shore.

    DSMB Technique

My DSMB is about 5 ft long. I just give it a quick shot from my octopus and let it go. I probably breath out to make my buoyancy a bit negative until I check my depth. Never had a problem.

Problems with LDS sod can’t 2 pool/check out dives but got Padi cert from them: will not having those 4 dives logged ever be problem in the future?

There are courses with PADI, SSI and BSAC that require a certain number of logged dives before you can enroll on the course. Every dive centre I have dived a also required that you have a logged dive within the previous 6 months or you have to do a refresher course. This 6 month rule is maybe...

    First Cold Water Post-dive Thoughts

61 F is fairly warm. My last cold water dive was about Easter . Surface water was 46.4 and below 13m it was 39.2 which was not cold. 4mm compressed neoprene drysuit, 5 mm hood, 5 mm neoprene gloves with tips of thumbs and first fingers cut out. Track suit bottoms and long sleeved shirt of...

The Books Every New Scuba Diver Needs

my son gave me a book for a birthday present, Its called the worlds 100 greatest dives or something like that. Unfortunately he has no intention of providing the funds to enable me to visit those dive sites!

    CESA Question

Just thought I would add, although I do not know for certain, is that when the instructor makes that statement he is probably referring to OW depths <20m and maybe not much more. Also he is probably thinking of inexperienced divers who are more likely to mess up OOA procedure and in their case...

    CESA Question

There is one certainty - if you have no air source and stay underwater you will die. A local PADI instructor (to the consternation of a number of other instructors) teaches that getting to the surface however fast is by a wide margin the lesser of two evils. On recreational dives a fast ascent...

Should I wear a snorkel or not

Yes, carry one but carry it somewhere near your waist. Not where it pulls on your mask or gets mixed with hoses or BCD vent / fill hose. I carry mine inside my T shirt or wetsuit (front zip) When in drysuit I hang it on a D ring on my BCD pocket. Mine is a Cressi and I leave the small clip on my...

Is Scuba just not meant for me?

If you have been medically diagnosed with anxiety continuing scuba is questionable, you could kill yourself and / or your buddy. I dived with a diver who had logged over 100 dives yet on one occasion on the first dive of a holiday she could not breathe as soon as she put her head under water, it...

Review My OWD experience so far..

I remember a night dive in Madeira a few years ago. The water was swirling quite a bit around the pier and it looked a bit menacing. Only me and the guide had dived at night before. One of the group a PADI OW instructor asked if there was anything about night diving that bothered me. I replied...

    Average Gas Consumption

Upper 60s is warm, I dive that in shorts and T shirt. I use a 3mm wetsuit from about 60 to 65.

Drysuit diving - continual issues with air in legs/feet.

Because my fins are positively buoyant I use 500 gram ankle weights. I use a weight jacket that has weight pockets low on the front of the thighs. The straps for both these mean a sudden rush of air to the feet is prevented. I have my weighting set so that my suit volume is only just above...

    RMV math…

I Have attached the PADI deep diver (40m) instructor manual. Can anyone find where SAC is in it? I did my deep diver 40m with SSI and there was nothing in either the practical lessons or the theory and written exams. I point out once again that my original post (which questioned the need for...

    RMV math…

You can get PADI advanced which is 30m without redundant air supply or knowing what one is. I have just glanced through the PADI deep diver 40m instructor manual and although redundant supply is mentioned there does not seem to be any requirement to be tested on it or use it. There is no mention...

    RMV math…

Very occasionally I dive solo but I prefer not to just in case I have a medical issue. Quite often I dive with just a buddy or two and we take turns leading / navigation. Our gas planning consists of letting the other know when we are at pre agreed cylinder pressures, typically 150, 120, 100...

    RMV math…

This all leads back to where I made my initial post which I still consider valid bearing in mind it was in the basic scuba section. I probably would not have made such a post in the advanced or technical section. However I still have a view that is difficult to explain in a way that will not be...

    RMV math…

Wibble has pointed out correctly that that an individuals SAC rate can vary and that sometimes he uses an extremely safe multiple of his "normal" SAC rate in his gas consumption predictions. He then goes on to describe underwater difficulties that can greatly increase gas consumption. In all...

    RMV math…

L13 What prompted you to post this was my statement "That RMV varies with depth" If you look at my earlier long post I stated that RMV does not vary with depth, it is the density and hence quantity that varies. When I wrote "That RMV varies with depth" it was a mistake due to rushed typing.
