All true. I absolutely believe that you can learn more by reading this forum and doing a few dives with a very knowledgeable buddy or buddies who are willing to pass some of their knowledge to you, than by taking and average Caribbean “official” class.
So my point was - the fact that people...
Presumably you'd have to own a plane or have a friend with a plane willing to strap you to a parachute and throw you out the door :)
Never tried skydiving, but from the ones that did I gather the operators have you go through a few hours of safety course before letting you jump. Places that...
Since one doesn’t have to take a formal class or get certified to dive, it’s only logical to assume that quite a few people wouldn’t.
Wether or not it’s a very bad idea is a philosophical question. What percentage of people take formal swimming classes? Is it significantly less risky to swim in...
Don't believe in fixin' something that ain't broken.
"Professionally " serviced one of the regs I no longer own, and it broke it. That's 100% fail rate.
I don't think it changed - it's two hour meter parking, first come first serve. As long as you can feed the meter between the dives (assuming you are doing two dives) you should be all set.
I don’t know what agency are you certifying with. I have AOW from PADI and I dive below 100’ quit a bit. No one on any of the charters required anything beyond AOW in terms of certification. Some charters ask for comparable dive experience in the past though.
In other words, with AOW you can go...
Just some thoughts, in no particular order.
Quicksilver makes surf suits, not dive suits. I've never seen a person diving in a Quicksilver suit. It doesn't mean that you can't dive in one, but most likely the characteristics of the neoprene (ability to withstand pressure) are less than ideal...
I haven't seen divers raid traps (you'd have to be right next to it to see it). I have seen poachers though. No numbers on tanks, no flag, and clearly undersized lobsters in the bag.
That's why I wrote "supposedly". I don't know if there are any groups that ARE truly marginalized, but that's besides the point.
I agree with the second part of your statement, that's precisely what I do.
I will say I’m a bit annoyed by these signs. Whoever posts them probably means well, but the message is a bit patronizing. Try to replace “divers” with any other supposedly marginalized group, and see how that works out.
Definitely too risky. Not only can you get yanked by a boat, you can also get entangled in your flag line very easily. If you know you’ll have to do something that will force you to let go of your line holder (like lobstering or even picking trash), attach something on the handle that would make...
It’s a widely accepted assumption that a jet skier not only wouldn’t respect the dive flag, but will see it as a slalom cone. Happened to me while I was 12 feet down.
A dive shop on Lake Champlain doesn’t run any charters on the 4th of July weekend because all the numbskulls get out of the...
