I love your enthusiasm for diving! Definitely get certified, and doing it with your girlfriend is an awesome activity to share together. Check out this YouTube channel if you haven't seen any of his videos on scuba related topics,

I can reccoment the Duyung Baru, it only holds 6 guests. The meals are home cooked and will be the best food on any liveraboard. They offer longer trips. Very budget friendly.
I bought my gear right off the bat with 4 dives. It didn’t go to waste because like yourself I knew this was a hobby I’d be doing for a long time.
However, now that I have over 100 dives there are things I had to either rebuy or purchases I regret due to the lack of experience I had when I...
I’d suggest you try the Pelgic Magic Black Water Dive.

Insanely cool!
Also Kona is very famous for world renowned coffee beans. Even if your are not a coffee snob, I’d suggest you try the Kona coffee and look...
I currently dive with the Hollis F1’s. I suggest you consider the Dive Rite XT’s. They weight considerably less and actually deliver more power then the F1’s.

Just did a similar trek to dive Komodo.

Just flew wth Interjet from JFK to CUN for a wedding in July. Chose them because of the cheap fares. It was a normal flight, they did take super long to unload the bags from the plane, so we had to wait by baggage claim for about 45 minutes.
I always buy online after research, from scubaboard or scuba lab gear reviews. Local dive stores have always tried cornering me into buying stuff I don’t want or like. Plus pricing is usually better.
Me and my brother had the same dilemma when we were going to Palau. The divemasters used freediving fins. I got the Hollis "F1 Bat Fins" and he got the Dive Rite XT's. All three should suffice. Cheers!
The scubapro *litehawk is excellent, and very minimalist. It's discontinued according to leisurepro, but they still sell them $250. If you don't want back inflated again like the litehawk look into the cressi travel light, its the one I use. Like the name implies, it folds nice and compact for...
