    Apeks VX1 mask questions

Mine just arrived yesterday. Ordered it in the UK then had it sent out to me as waiting for aqualung australia to get their faeces together meant i would be waiting a rather long time. Overall the quality feels amazing which frankly i expected no less from apeks, perfect seal although...

how to decide what to wear?

I have the hollis neotek semi and I still use it here even though I can comfortably dive in tshirt and boardies, it doesn't get used all the time just every now and again as it does get rather warm out of the water. I'd say go for that, you will definitely not get cold and its a very comfortable...

    BCD question.

To put it simply, lower lift capacity tends to be used for warm water and higher for cold. You need more weight in cold due to a thicker/more buoyant exposure suit therefore need more lift. If you try using a travel bcd with 17lb lift capacity with a semi dry and 22lbs of weight you may not have...

    Training ideas needed

Good old upside down egg and spoon (ping pong ball and sppon) always worked well for me. Different variations like having it as a relay, obstacle course or one without a mask and the other a guide. Great for team work and communication. Sounds like a great idea though, i wish my dive shop did...

Randomly feeling panicky and anxiety -opinion

As its been said nice slow breathing all the way in and all the way out and also a little self assurance goes a long way. Sounds stupid but it works. If you feel a bit panicky just stop think breathe and tell yourself you can do this.

    Tipping an Instructor?

What should happen and what does happen are unfortunately 2 different things. I have been tipped in many forms, cash, beer, devils lettuce, prawns and scallops mainly in canada not so much anywhere else. I agree with tipping as much as any other service if it's particulary good then feel free...

    Best Breathing technique

Don't worry about air consumption, just focus on nailing your buoyancy and being the best damn diver you can be. I would much rather dive with an air hog who has their head in the right place and good technique than a self involved clown who can stay down for 90mins. Bad news is you'll never...

    Self Reliant/Solo pre-requisites vs DiveMaster pre-requisites

So you are saying every single one of your students on their very first time in open water would react as trained and not make the inside of their wetsuits significantly browner? If that is the case you sir are a very lucky man and I envy you greatly. Also not everyone is lucky enough to work...

UK scuba training - my experience so far

Good ol' blighty is the best place to learn, prepares you for the worst conditions and makes you appreciate the ocean. All the divers you meet are great too as they are committed, they know the conditions are less than favourable but they go anyway for the love of it. Hearing people whinge about...

    Gear Sanity Check

Agreed on ditching the console, if you plan on a lot of diving it will just get in the way. Shearwaters are more than reliable enough. I wouldn't opt for the quattro especially if you are heading down the tech route. They are OK fins but I'd go for a single material fin as they tend to last a...

    Discovery Scuba Dive and fins

Unfortunately there are quite a few things that are mandatory that are sometimes ignored by some dive shops. I have been sent photos by friends of them doing DSDs and my first question is "where the hell are your fins?" Now as funny as it is to watch someone flap around in scuba gear with no...

Had a not so fun experience, any ideas?

No the red isn't my ascent rate it is becasue I had gone into deco, diverlog for aqualung isn't exactly the clearest. My quickest ascent rate was 4.5m per minute. unfortunately yes, without any physical symptoms you are correct, it could be anything.

My old boss, a retired gp. The man knows his stuff when it comes to diving issues.

Had a not so fun experience, any ideas?

So as it turns out I suffered from a panic attack proabably triggered by a little narcosis which im not going to lie is not the easiest thing to admit. I'm a confident diver and I've never had any issues with anxiety even in highly stressful diving situations which is why I was so confused as to...

Had a not so fun experience, any ideas?

Well you learn something new every day. No I'd be spending a fortune if I did as I'm in the water pretty much everyday. If it was from an equalizing problem there would have been earlier signs and my ascent was slow enough that it wouldn't have been such an instant feeling. My quickest ascent...

Had a not so fun experience, any ideas?

I've felt the effects of narcosis before and they were not like this they also didnt start on the ascent. I first thought CO issues but there were 8 of us on the boat all using the same tanks filled from the same compressor on the same day. I've also experienced vertigo before (one of my ears...

    Padi & Asthma

If you crash a rental car it doesn't look bad for the rental agency, however if you have a dive accident it tends to look pretty bad on the shop that took you out even if they were not at fault. It's a pretty standard practice. Covers everyones rear end if things do go south.

Had a not so fun experience, any ideas?

Ok so I had a rather unnerving experience acouple of weeks ago during a dive and for the life of me I cannot figure out what the cause of it was. So I was diving a wreck (no penetration) at 40m, the plan was to descend down a mooring line on to the wreck spend a few minutes having a look then...

    Padi & Asthma

The dive operator should give you a basic questionaire on your medical history. If you answer yes to any of the questions then you have to have a a signed permission from a doctor to be able to dive. These are usually valid for up to 12 months. one of the questions does ask about asthma. As for...

    Gear purchases you DON’T regret

I never thought i needed dry gloves until i tried them, changed my life! As did spring straps. For times when i wasn't in a dry suit my Hollis neotek semi dry is easily the best purchase i have made. Feels like it was designed for me. Makes me feel like sexy flanders.
