New Apple Watch is a dive computer

Just got mine yesterday. I'm taking it on a couple of very shallow dives this weekend in the Niagara area. I'll try to get a pic of it next to my perdix to see how the displays compare. My first disappointment is that today is a shore dive that I have GPS coordinates for, but my buddy and I...

Looking for dive buddies in Lake Simcoe area

Check out York Region Scuba: https://www.facebook.com/groups/yrscuba They usually dive in Barrie once a week during the summer. I'll also send you my contact info in a private message. I'm back and forth between home and the cottage in the summer, but if we sync up while I'm home I'd be happy...

Diving during COVID-19 - Possible Options in Ontario?

I plan to do some solo diving in Lake Simcoe if the powers that be haven't shut down access to my usual locations. I don't want to carpool, and I can't really do a proper buddy check 2m apart, so I don't plan to do any buddy diving until the restrictions are relaxed. Then there's the whole idea...

    Rec Divemaster: any point?

I'll add my voice to agree with the theme of the thread. After I finished rescue I was strongly encouraged to take DM, but I dive for fun and I could see that it was sucking some of the fun out of things many. I just finished my TDI Advanced Nitrox & Deco Procedures. I worked on it for two...

Recreational Ascent Rate in the last 15 feet

I figured I like to do 15fpm, but if I'm being real I often rush it at the end, so I voted 30fpm. Then I actually checked my logs, and it turns out I'm almost always much slower than 15fpm. I guess time flies when you're having fun.

Forgot to charge pony bottle 1st stage

When this happened to me I was at a max depth of about 95', and below 70' for maybe 30 - 40 minutes. I hadn't charged it, and it took three water laden breaths before it started breathing normally. Those breaths were very difficult to draw too. In hindsight I should have switched back to my...

Forgot to charge pony bottle 1st stage

I flooded mine this way and then breathed it for 12 minutes on deco. Fresh water. No harm done. Been using it all season with no issues. Other than the coughing fit. I now always purge before switching to deco gas! Ymmv

I mentioned this at a recent club BBQ and was sent this link: P.B. Locke Wreck Dive. It points to a page on their site here: Trips

    Diving in Toronto

The permit I mentioned is just a parking permit for Oro Medonte, which is the municipality that contains Shanty Bay. No permit is required for diving. There are no dive-only spots that I'm aware of, but there won't be much to see unless you're diving a known wreck. A group of us once managed to...

    Diving in Toronto

I live about half way between Toronto and Barrie, so I do most of my local diving in Lake Simcoe. Our most popular spot at Shanty Bay has a number of mildly interesting things to see and you can get close to 100' of depth. Wednesday nights are most popular. A $130 permit is required between this...

    Best DSMB?

@Todd Whitworth I used to have the UTD DSMB and was very happy with it until I lost it. I think it would match your requirements. Now I'm using a cheapie from AliExpress but I'm happy with it too...

Drysuit urine management survey - men

I didn't vote... I've used a condom catheter with P-valve a couple of times, but it wasn't pleasant. I'm thinking to try an adult diaper. For now I avoid being properly hydrated, which isn't a great solution as others have pointed out.

    Recommendations for September?

I've used my 7mm as early as April and as late as December in Lake Simcoe, but I have a very good tolerance for cold. Last September the water was about 65F (18C) in the shallow 20-30' range, and about 55F (12C) in the 60-70' range. If you're suffering in 21C water in a worn out 3mm then a...

    Recommendations for September?

Most of the sites I dive have small boats. One has four, but only two are accessible with OW, and one is very difficult to reach on a single tank. One has a cabin cruiser with a skeleton sitting on the toilet at about 20', so it is easy and fun. The JS Morrison at Centennial Beach is large but...

    Recommendations for September?

The good news is that September is one of the warmest months to dive in Southern Ontario since the water holds the heat from summer for some time. The bad news is that you'll still need at least a 7mm wetsuit. I at least enjoy diving without a hood in August and September. I dive at Lake Simcoe...

    Sending out a Canuck Greeting

I usually dive Lake Simcoe on Wednesday nights, and some weekends. Send me a message if you'd like to join in. The ice has cleared and we're diving now. We're in drysuits but it is doable in a 7mm wetsuit too. We're diving the J.C. Morrison tomorrow night at Centennial Beach in Barrie. It is a...

    Diverite XTs Slipping Off

You know, now that you mention it, maybe I'll try a loser home made fin keeper made from thick bungee that would go over the fin more easily. At least until I can get the new springs. That is funny!

    Diverite XTs Slipping Off

I think you're both right, and a new set of springs is the way to go. @JohnnyC, I think keepers are usually worn over full foot fins (what I'd call flippers) but getting them around spring straps is an ordeal. I tried that once. I use them to give me feet the sensation that something's pressing...

    Diverite XTs Slipping Off

Thanks @runsongas. The boots are DUI "Turbo Boots" size XL and the fins are Diverite XT size L. I normally take size 11 shoes. I'm thinking the springs are getting over extended around my heel and that might have worn them out, leading to the lack of tension you indicated. I think they're...

    Diverite XTs Slipping Off

On my last local dive of last season, one of my fins came loose during my safety stop and slipped off. On my first local dive of this season, I had the same problem and had to keep tugging the strap back up, and one came off completely when I got to shore and was removing other gear. They've...
