    South Africa diving - overview?

You'd be surprised; most Cape Town divers dive wetsuits o_O, generally 7.5mm. But yes, I dived Aliwal in a drysuit but I was using a CCR haha :D. I've dived a drysuit in warmer conditions too... it's great :p. Last summer there was a particular week where the weather in False Bay was really...

    South Africa diving - overview?

Thanks billt4sf, I got a bit carried away :p. The water temperature in Aliwal was around 21 degrees C/70 degrees Fahrenheit according to my dive logs. I dived Aliwal in a Santi trilaminate suit with a Santi "Summer" undersuit. It was very comfortable, I didn't feel cold at all. Our dives were...

    South Africa diving - overview?

I'm a Cape Town diver, I thought I'd just share a few tidbits : Africa is a big place and South Africa is a big place. You can find many different types of diving in South Africa depending on the location. I'm a fairly new diver, but I've dived Tenerife, Thailand, The Great Barrier Reef (Flynn...

Canadian diver dies in Cape Town

@tridacna is correct: I've dived the SAS Pietermaritzburg wreck several times and I've never seen more than 20m on my dive computer. It's a fun wreck, a generally easy dive. 27m is more the "Smitswinkel" wrecks (like the Orotava, Goodhope, Rockeater, Princess Elizabeth). @sweir : I highly doubt...

Best dive location in south africa for a beginner?

Pisces Divers in Simon's Town are great. Definitely one of the better operators. Apart from seals they sometimes take people to see Broadnose Sevengill sharks in "Shark Alley", which is very close to shore.

Canadian diver dies in Cape Town

Pisces is a good dive shop - in fact I'd say it's the best in Cape Town. They run a clean, efficient and safe business. They're a responsible operator. I don't have any affiliation with them beyond having done some dives with them (I generally dive with a more technically-oriented operator). I...

    Subsurface & Shearwater Perdix AI

@theBro: Ah, I got confused: I forgot the first dive in the DB was an OC "test dive" by Shearwater. @elmo: Thanks, I've subscribed to the list and I'll try installing a later version of qt5 in the container :) .

    Subsurface & Shearwater Perdix AI

I'm trying to get both the Windows and Linux builds to build reliably using a Docker container (and automatically upload the resulting builds). I'm struggling a bit with the "googlemaps" dependency. My dives appear to have continuous air pressure data for both transmitters. You can find my...

    Subsurface & Shearwater Perdix AI

The Windows build hit a few hiccups, but I was able to make it work. The resultant installer can be found in this Google Drive shared folder. This build is naturally untested and I hope I'm not stepping on toes by sharing it. I've tested it quickly on Windows and I'm happy to say it renders...

    Subsurface & Shearwater Perdix AI

haha, sure thing, I'll post a link to the Windows executable as soon as it has built... if it builds successfully :) . The commit that seems to have fixed the issue is here, if anyone is interested.

    Subsurface & Shearwater Perdix AI

So I just finished building Subsurface from the Github repository (on Linux) and I'm pleased to say that it does correctly import both tank pressures from the Shearwater Desktop DB. So that's AWESOME :D . Now I'm going to try and build the windows executable haha - not that I really need it, but...

    Subsurface & Shearwater Perdix AI

Yes, I can see the second transmitter in Shearwater Desktop. The same issue occurs if I export the log from Shearwater Desktop and import into Subsurface. I have inspected the contents of the Shearwater Desktop SQLite export and it does contain the second sensor's pressure. So Subsurface Desktop...

    Subsurface & Shearwater Perdix AI

I have had a chance to test Perdix AI log downloads with Subsurface on Android and the only significant issue I've noticed so far is that the gas pressure on the second transmitter isn't logged. I use two transmitters on a CCR for diluent and oxygen tanks and the Perdix AI as both a pressure...

I just wanted to say thank you for the added functionality. I haven't tested it yet but I'll probably get a chance to test it in two days.

    Underwater Navigation Device

Has anyone tried building an INS-like system themselves ? Sparkfun makes nice little "9 degrees-of-freedom" kits. I've managed to get one working on a stripped-down Raspberry Pi (ODROID-W) logging at 600 Hz currently to a SQLite database on an SD card. I figure I could log from an array of...

Greetings from Cape Town, South Africa

haha, only the jacket part (plus underlying wetsuit) is 10mm :p . I haven't had a problem with the wetsuit or the cold so far, which is great :D . The cold was my biggest fear before starting but so far I've barely noticed it (except when I hired gloves and didn't notice the hole in them until I...

Greetings from Cape Town, South Africa

Hi I just thought I'd introduce myself, if anyone ever wants to know more about me. I reside in a town called Durbanville, near Cape Town, South Africa. I qualified for my OWD at the end of June 2016 and two days ago I completed my 13th dive, which also happened to be my "Deep Adventure" AOWD...

Scubapro Galileo Luna Or Sol Transmitter Battery

I just wanted to say thanks to kelemvor - this thread is really helpful. I just got a second hand Galileo Sol and air transmitter off eBay and on my first dive with it the air transmitter issued a low battery warning 2/3rds of the way through the dive. The Varta CR 2/3 AA battery is really...
