    Switching from PADI to SSI

My personal opinion is it would benefit all divers to have two (or more) large agencies competing for market share. Serious competition would drive them to improve their offerings, both to divers and to shops and instructors. I don’t think an agency like RAID, whose website has been unable to...

    Just joined

Welcome to scubaboard. At a dive site I frequent, someone’s remains are in a Scuba tank at about 45 feet next to a wreck. It’s in a Provincial Park so I’m pretty sure it isn’t really supposed to be there. However, each time I pass it I pay my respects by using the brush attached to clean the...

need more lift when I switch to a dry suit?

My opinion, given those numbers. Let’s say you have a dry suit failure right at the start of the dive. You’ll need 12 (lead) + 6 (plate) + 8 (full steel 100) = 26 lbs of buoyancy. You’ve got 35, so especially if the lead is ditchable, you are good. But most people need a few extra pounds when...

need more lift when I switch to a dry suit?

Possibly, depending on your size and how much weight you’ll need to sink all the nice warm fluffy undergarments. If you had a sudden huge leak from a seal or zipper failure, all the buoyancy from those undergarments will suddenly disappear. If you are 5 foot 2 inches, 115 lbs and in not so...

What's the chance of being charged a camera tax at Los Cabos Airport

2 of the 25 divers on my June 19 liveaboard departure got hit with the “tax”, both had bags that were obviously Scuba gear. Small sample size, but I’d avoid bags, tshirts or hats that scream scuba when you are arriving.

    PADI Divemaster Final Exam

The open book part has a lot of looking up the standards in the instructor manual. Get to know the layout and where to find things in that and you’ll be fine.

Question Regarding expanding our business in USA

”What website? We didn't have a "website" for years 🙄!!!” If you want to expand your business, you might want to rethink that, and also build up a serious social media presence. The largest busiest LDS in my area has the best and most up to date website and a large social media presence. I...

    Review Now certified!

Yes, any computer is better than no computer. For recreational divers the only need (as opposed to want or nice to have) for a more expensive computer is as age fades our close vision, the bright colour screens are easier to read.

    New deco planning tool

Ok tried again and got a different signup window. The first had no kapcha. Worked this time. Comments: I only measure depth in metres - metric please The sliders are very difficult to use on an iPad. Let me key in a number or at least a up and down arrow When I enter a depth of 100 feet...

    Review Now certified!

My only computer advice, since there is a lot of personal preference involved, is: If you go for a Shearwater Peregrine, pay the extra to get the TX model as it has a built in compass and you can get a transmitter later for AI if you like. Also just get a computer. I recommend to all my...

    Advice on new BCD

By far the best BCD cargo pockets I have used are on the Aqualung Dimension. The hip belt and pockets on the Dimension are mounted lower than most other BCDs so are easy to access. Not jammed under your armpits like most BCD pockets. And since it is back inflate, inflating the BCD on the surface...

Negligent homicide: Swiss diving instructor convicted over student's death

In addition he must also have completed Divemaster which requires an additional deep dive scenario or PADI Deep Diver certification. Both require a slow controlled ascent monitoring the ascent rate. Although PADI just specifies “deep” for this I think it is generally taken to be “deeper than...

Operator / Certification for 13 yr old?

I’d consider doing the theory and pool work at home then just the ocean dives on vacation. Much easier to find an instructor good with kids at home without time constraints. I’ve only taught a dozen or so of 10-14 year olds, but have found the pool sessions the most important for them and...

Question Shearwater Peregrine TX vs Eon Core

The Eon does not lock up for a missed safety stop. When set to Buhlmann the Eon will not lock up at all. It does lock up if you miss over 4 minutes of a deco stop in RGBM mode. I never plan to do that. If an emergency forces me to, I’ll take a day or more off. Although the algorithm will...

Question Shearwater Peregrine TX vs Eon Core

I own an Eon core and have used a Peregrine. Both have great, easy to read displays. Both have large buttons easy to use with gloves underwater. Eon display layout is more customizable. And I find it more “tasteful” the Peregrine looks more “Industrial” - your opinion may vary. Peregrine can...

    Question for instructors!

The students I have taught that got the most out of the course were the ones that really came to learn. I taught a movie stunt coordinator who was going to be shooting a movie with a few underwater scenes. Most serious student I’ve ever had. We triple reviewed the plan and contingencies for...

    Balancing Heavy Fins

Instead of adding weight, try to move some around sticking with the same total. You mention sidemount, so it won’t be exactly the same, but for my back mount students I’ll move a couple of pounds from their weight belt to the BCD integrated weight pockets which are a bit higher, then to the...
