    Flesh eating bacteria question

mscmicrobiology- Pardon me for going OT here (mods, feel free to move it). On the chance that you are involved in microbiology...What are your thoughts on how to deal with cuts and scrapes in areas where so-called flesh eating bacteria have been an issue? My understanding is that there are two...

    Scuba Cylinder kills fire fighter

'Waiting for it to fail instead of replacing on schedule is very much "penny wise and pound foolish" in my opinion." Totally agree with you. However, the rated life cycles of a plain copper burst disk, which may experience 1000 cycles in one year of commercial use (and the tank is designed for...

    diver with a beard

Had uncovered (sealed over, had to cut open) the purge button in one mask a long time ago. And it works like magic, although on a deep dives the little nylon purge assembly really presses against my (whatever you call the space between the nose and mouth?). Also generally use a non-purge mask...

Why not use TTL cord for non-TTL flash

That's the wonderful thing about acronyms. Especially the ones that are in use for ages, that some "outsider" reinvents as totally different in a different field.

Care of latex seals - KY jelly ?

Talc used to be all we had. It is inert, cheap, stable, and it works very simply by clogging (sealing) the pores in the surface and preventing oxidation of the latex. Not to be confused with corn starch or the various adulterated "flavors" of powders.

Why not use TTL cord for non-TTL flash

In electronics, TTL normally means "transistor-transistor logic" and the voltage and amperage on TTL lines are both minimal. If a sync cord was passing higher voltage, it could burn out the TTL cable very easily.

Why are New 7/8-14 UNF Tank Valves Air-Only?

XS does answer the phone and allow the technical people to speak to outsiders, it might be worth calling directly. I'd guess either a seat or a seal of some kind was changed, and is no longer oxygen-safe. If that's the case they probably also can tell you if the older style parts can be...

    Repainting tank

A little coarse sandpaper (80-120 grit) to roughen the epoxy surface, then a dab of Testor's hobby paint, which is a good enamel paint in a small bottle, or any evil solvent based paint should do. Punch or cut a circle in a piece of masking tape if you want a neat "spot". If you see a tank that...

    Scuba Cylinder kills fire fighter

Thanks, rjack. I guess I've been misinformed, I was told the discs were integral to the new plugs so that the whole assembly had to be changed. From what you say, the copper disc itself CAN be changed, even if no one bothers to. I used to change my own burst discs, and apply food-grade grease...

    Repainting tank

The white Fabers should be EPOXY coated, not regular paint IIRC. And there's all sorts of paints and solvents. The odds are the last owner used something like a half-pint can of Rustoleum either water based or alkyd paint to paint those numbers. You might want to check at a good hardware store...

Equipment Failure - your data please!

Life threatening failure?? Aren't we all taught that there should be at least three ways to avoid a problem form any one equipment failure? Aren't we all supposed to have redundant gear, if there aren't multiple options to reach the surface? AFAIK the DAN studies have concluded that fully half...

    Scuba Cylinder kills fire fighter

AFAIK with the new style disks, where the disk and plug are one fused assembly and the disk itself no longer can be replaced separately, there's no way in hell that the valve is going to vent through the multiple holes UNLESS THE DISK RUPTURES. Physically impossible any other way, because...

    New To Wearing Hoods

A neoprene hood can be tailored just like any other part of a wetsuit. If there's simply too much material for it you, that can be slit, cut out, and the edges glued (with neoprene cement or Aquaseal which is somewhat stiffer). Or possibly just left to overlap and lay flat. Your LDS should have...

    Scuba Cylinder kills fire fighter

Oh. Thanks for clearing that up, Bob. Even if the rocket science (thrust) part is debatable, yeah, I'd be loathe to just take a fitting off a possibly fully pressurized tank. And if I absolutely HAD to, I think I'd make Real Damn Sure it was chained down first. But then again, I'm lucky, in...

Watch out for falling Rock! Lesson Learned in Situational Awareness.

Oh, great, now I get to take my hardhat diving. No, wait, I can't do that until I take the PADI HardHat Diving course, can I?

    Scuba Cylinder kills fire fighter

Reading further down the original URL...FD dive rescue team members purchased the tanks, so SCUBA vs SCBA is not an issue, they were SCUBA for SCUBA use. But that page shows a link to the original NIOSH report--which requires a UID and password to access it. So we don't(?) have ready access to...

Tank Band - Does Webbing Size Matter

Take a sheet of 400 grit 3M wet-or-dry sandpaper. Cut off a full length 4" wide piece and fold it over, back to back, so the grit is facing out on both sides. Now use some contact cement or Aquaseal to glue it together that way, so there's abrasive on both sides. If you slip that between...

    Airport suitcase theft

Considering that the TSA here in the US fires some 500 baggage handlers/inspectors for pilferage and theft in a typical year, I'd say pilferage and theft are sadly the norm, and don't think anyplace is going to be totally free from that. Make sure you've got baggage insurance that covers what's...
