Scuba_Couple's May Trip Report to Key Largo

We did Skippers Dockside for dinner. It was awesome. Fish and chips - the slaw - well, lets put it this way, I don’t even like slaw. Not only did I eat mine, I ate Annette’s slaw as well. Service was great. I tried the Mojito - I was spoiled with these in Cancun last year and will say the...

Scuba_Couple's May Trip Report to Key Largo

Hey Dudes and Dudettes! Greetings from Key Largo! We just arrived a couple of hours ago and I thought I’d do a running trip report while we are here. First, if you ever decide to drive from Northeast Atlanta suburbs to Key Largo, just beat yourself in the head with a 2x4. With I-85 having...

    Dangerous lies?

We are doing RR and this is specifically related to Spiegel Grove. So that is awesome that they do that.

    Dangerous lies?

Well Duh, I'm a dumb a$$. I didn't even think to ask for a custom blend. Only dove Nitrox a few times and have just been used to being handed a cylinder of 32. No one has ever asked what blend I would like - but again, am new with Nitrox

    Dangerous lies?

First, understand that we don't have lots of experience, so no judgements please. So we are doing 4 days of diving next week. I bought a Nitrox package that covers all the dives. But I noticed that one of the dives is 130 fsw - a wreck. The MOD of Nitrox 32 according to my computer is 110...

What should I look to get out of a Refresher Course?

EXACTLY! Two years ago we (wife and I) did a PADI Refresher. We had an awesome instructor. She ran us through some basic skills then concentrated on what she saw we needed. ie: I had no issue with mask clearing but my wife did. We both needed help sharing air with the Air/2. We didn't...

Key Largo - Looking for Seasoned diver thoughts

Actually that is not a bad review. We don't need a big pool or anything fancy. We are diving every morning and for the afternoons we would just like some peace where we can read our Kindles, hop in the water if we get too hot, and basically chill and relax. We might do one afternoon of diving...

Key Largo - Looking for Seasoned diver thoughts

Another question - we are staying at Key West Inn. I like the idea of a kitchen so we can save a few bucks (and give those bucks to RR :-) ). Anyone with experience staying at Key West Inn - do they have a pool? Anything else we need to know?

"My wife won't let me ..."

It sounds like a lot of us guys are lucky. Either our wives approve or joins us. I am blessed that pretty much every single hobby I am involved in, my beautiful wife is into as well. She is always my buddy when diving. We both are constantly working on our Salt Water reef tank. We have a...

    Observed an OW class yesterday

I’m one of those that got the rushed OW course at a resort in HI. I’m sure starting out even after I received my cert, I looked not unlike what you witnessed. The interesting thing is watching other divers I recognized pretty quickly on my own that I had some work to do. The two absolute best...

Key Largo - Looking for Seasoned diver thoughts

Ok, if we wanted beach and surf, where is the best, closest public beach - I'm sure toward Miami, but since I know nothing of the area, what does more "marinated" members think - one that would be closest to KL?

Key Largo - Looking for Seasoned diver thoughts

Hummmm, ok. So scratch shore diving off the list. What about public beaches. Let's say we want to take our Kindles and enjoy a relaxing afternoon and listen to the ocean. Thoughts on that?

Key Largo - Looking for Seasoned diver thoughts

Hey, one other question - is there any decent shore diving in KL? We planning all our dives with RR as morning dives. If we wanted to rent a couple of cylinders one afternoon and just walk into the water unguided is there anything there to see?

    Personal bank loan

+1 on that. Paypal is great for this. Have used it several times. Just make SURE you calculate out how much you need to pay a month to pay it off before interest hits.

    Personal bank loan

Totally agree. SP is NOT cheap. My wife and I rented a couple of times. But we went with SP when we bought. As mentioned earlier, went to the store and bought the whole SP setup, fins, BC, computer and reg. I absolutely love my SP Glide BC and wife loves her SP Bella. When we didn’t have...

Key Largo - Looking for Seasoned diver thoughts

Wow! All these great replies. Thanks! We went to RR a little over 2 years ago. But it was a shop here in Atl that took us and was just two days. Without a car, all we saw was RR, Hampton Inn, and some restaurant we walked to (about 200 ft from RR). (oh, and a really nice LDS pretty close)...

    Personal bank loan

And this part is personal preference - but I much prefer my own gear over renting. Last year we went to Cancun. Wife had just recently had shoulder surgery so we figured diving was off the table. Turns out the Dive Op on the resort was able to work with her - she would get in the water, then...

    Personal bank loan

My deal was a little different. I got all new equipment and put it on "lay-away" for three months at the shop. The deal was that I could use it anytime I wanted and pay the standard rental fee. However, the fee that I paid went directly toward the price of the equipment. I still owed about...

    Dive Knife recommendations

I'm not sure the exact location - we were on a barge about 5 miles off shore in Orange Beach, Alabama. My brother lives there and he later told me that particular location is a very popular fishing spot. It was actually marked on his chart plotter as a fishing spot.

    Dive Knife recommendations

I only have two purposes for a knife. 1) if I get caught in monofilament again or 2) if attacked by a shark so I can stab my dive buddy and swim like hell! :)
