Review [short review] Deep In The Dark Custom Pioneer Reel

Ah, awesome, I've been thinking about one of these for a while! Really great to hear a first-person report.

    Wetsuit 3mm women

I think you started another thread on this already in another forum, but Bare Evoke.

    Wetsuit 3mm women

None of the above - Bare Evoke! I’m a lady, and have tried tons of wetsuits. I love Bare, and their Evoke wetsuit is both warm and comfy. I have Bare Evokes hanging in my closet in 3mm, 5mm, and 7mm thickness - it really is just that good. Their women’s wetsuits come in dress sizes (0,2,4, etc)...

    Tern owners, does it work?

I own two Terics; the only issue I've encountered is a battery that slowly lost its ability to keep its charge after a year of very intensive use (hundreds and hundreds of dives). Shearwater replaced the battery for free. I've dived a Tern as part of a test dive, and really enjoyed it. It's...

Best way to lubricate yourself to get into a wetsuit?

I regularly wear a 7mm wetsuit, and have never found any kind of lubrication necessary. It gets easier with practice. Getting into a very dry wetsuit that’s been stored in the A/C for months is hard - if I have a wetsuit that’s hasn’t been used for a while, I run it under the shower a few days...

    Weight option for doubles

Another vote for the Halcyon v-weight pouch and soft weights; I recently picked one up to help with trim issues in doubles in a drysuit, and it’s just a really nice well-designed piece of gear.

What undergarment for drysuit are you wearing?

I wear the Fourth Element Halo AR in the Florida springs/caves (72 year round), and still get cold, but I’m an outlier when it comes to temperatures - I always run way cold.

    Must Visit Dive Shops?

All the classic cave shops in North Florida are worth a visit, and each have their own character: Cave Country, Extreme Exposure, Dive Outpost, Amigo's (omg Amigo's), Cave Adventurers out in the panhandle, etc.

Question Air consumption, is mine good?

Am one of those blessed lady divers - an HP120 would last me about 4.5-5.5 hours at that depth. Dudes shouldn’t feel bad.

Need a new dive light suggestion

I can also second the recommendation for the CX3, and external charging - large collection of cheap dead lights here as well.

What it's like to dive for the first time

We are running a research project (funded by the NSF) on this question right now, taking people who have never dived before into the Florida springs....in short: scuba diving for the first time is more meaningful and has a bigger impact than folks expect (even among people who WANT to try it for...

Provocative talk yesterday at NSS-CDS: Toss out the rule of thirds?

Stratis Kas addressed this at length in the talk - this is NOT a physiological problem of being "in shape," it's a psychological stress response. I'm a research psychologist, and he is right. We use physiological measures such as heart rate and respiratory response as dependent measures when...

    What would you do? AITA?

We did, eventually, although it took a couple hours! Coast Guard and all the other local dive boats were also out looking. Seas had risen because we had a hurricane incoming the next day, and their yellow/green SMB was small and almost invisible in the swell and white caps. A lot of things went...

    What would you do? AITA?

We had a similar situation happen (diver went missing on a live drift, and we all missed the second dive). The dive op offered us all a credit for a free trip in the future, and honored it when I called them a year later to ask if the offer was still good.

Question Line Cutter or Trauma Shears?

    Another vote for line-cutter here.

Best Easy Dive Destination for Buddy with Health Issues

CoCoView in Roatan is very accommodating towards divers with special health needs; it's not going to be the Phillipines or Indonesia, but the boats go out twice a day, all the gear is stored in dive lockers and DMs will set it up for her before/after every dive. They go the extra mile for folks...

How to Pick Freshwater With Good Visibility?

Most lakes and freshwater sites aren’t going to have great vis - neither do lots of ocean areas! Best way to gauge is just to look from the surface - how far can you see down to the bottom? If you can’t see clear to the bottom at ten or fifteen feet, horizontal vis will be even worse. In...

Lost Mask & Fins (Manatee Springs)

I know this is a long shot, but a buddy of mine lost his fins & mask after a dive at Manatee Springs last Sunday. If you happen to come across a pair of black Dive Rite XT fins (XL) and a blue Tusa Freedom HD mask, please drop them off at Cave Country or Extreme Exposure in High Springs (or drop...

    Recommendations for 7mm Wetsuit?

Ah, Evoke is the woman's suit (I'm a woman); I believe Reactive is the men's version of the Evoke. But seconding everything you said, their suits are truly excellent - I'm really impressed with the newer neoprene too, and how easy it is to get off and on, without sacrificing any warmth.
