Question How old are you and how long certified? Poll- please take part!

66 years old, certified in 2014. 270 logged dives. Wish I had started 30 years sooner (or more :) )

    Remember your first dive?

I just got back today from a 2 week stay on St. Croix. Our last dive of the trip was in Cane Bay and sounds very much like the second dive you recalled. Steep wall that drops off to the blue abyss. We went to 115 feet for a short time and did our safety stop on the swim toward shore. Awesome...

Grand Cayman east side dive operators

Thanks for your help. The trip is in 6 weeks and was a gift (from someone who doesn't know about diving). I did look through several GC threads but didn't see the specific answers I was looking for. Have a happy New Year.

Grand Cayman east side dive operators

My wife and I are going to Grand Cayman in a few weeks for a dive vacation. We are staying at the Wyndham on the east side of the island. Would love to hear some dive shop recommendations. Are we going to have to drive every day to the west side to meet a dive operator? Are there any...

If you could only dive from one place in Belize

As above, the outer atolls are where it's at. Would not recommend Ambergris, reef there was not very healthy and the topography was pretty boring. Lighthouse reef, Aquarium and several other dive sites in that area are great. It would mean staying at one of the more expensive resorts though.

Grand/Little Cayman: possible to dive relatively shallow?

Most of our dives on Little Cayman the boat was moored in 25-40' and you were allowed to not follow the dive master and can stay on top of the wall the whole dive if you want. You can get an idea on this video. The first couple of clips are on the edge of the wall in about 50' of water and the...

Royal Caribbean Cruise Diving - Roatan and Cozumel

We stayed at Turquois Bay and dove with Subway for a week. Maynor was one of the best dive masters I've been with. He's the big guy at about 0:50.

What nitrogen narcosis symptoms have you experienced?

Deepest dive was 140 ft and I couldn't tell any symptoms at all. Lots of dives around 100 feet and no symptoms. That doesn't necessarily mean I wasn't narced but I couldn't tell it. If multi-tasking had been required it might have been apparent?

Why not SPG under the left arm to left Chest D ring?

I have an old fashioned console and run it under the left arm and attach it to my left chest ring with a strong retractor. Keeps it tight to my chest. If I need to use the compass I can grab and pull. As The Chairman pointed out it does require me to unclip to doff and don but for a...

Video Cozumel April 2018 with Tres Pelicanos (3P’s)

Awesome video...particularly loved the close up of the Rock Beauty and the aggressive little damsel fish. If they grew to 5 lbs the ocean would be a very dangerous place. The Pearly Jawfish shot was really nice too. They are so skittish, it takes some patience and good buoyancy to get that...

How do divers not realize their air isn't on?

Agree completely. With zero air in my BC I still have to exhale significantly to descend. I would have zero problems swimming my rig to the surface if needed. Is it not possible to reach back and turn your air on? Are there some setups that make this impossible? I don't think there is...

How do divers not realize their air isn't on?

Our instructor did air off under water in the shallow (~3ft) end of the pool. We knew what was going to happen. She wanted us to find out what it felt like and what it looked like on our SPG. She quickly turned it back on after we gave the OOA signal. We also practiced reaching back and...

    Remember your first dive?

First dive after OW cert was Cozumel-Tormentos. At least we had the good sense to hire a private DM for the day. Max depth 64'...SAC 0.761. I remember the exhilaration and a twinge of nervousness. The dive lasted all of 37 minutes. I remember the next day we did Columbia Deep (90') and...

Instructor bent after running out of air at 40m

This turn in the thread is a little concerning to me. I've only been diving about 4 years with 150 dives and I've never felt any discernible symptoms of narcosis. Probably 20% of my dives have been between 90-110 feet and I did the Blue Hole dive to 135 feet. I haven't had to do any...

    Horribly out of Trim

What a great thread! It's easy to forget when you are trying to obtain it but proficiency in diving is a means to an end, safely and responsibly enjoying the beauty of the under water world! It may not be a part of the curriculum but fin pivot was taught exactly like that when I took my OW...

It appears they are reading Scuba Board! :D

Why are the divers on "Shark Week" so sloppy/crappy?

They dive because of what they love, they don't love diving.

Is it possible to do a Manta dive if staying on Oahu or Maui?

Kona Honu divers is another possible dive op to consider. If there is any way possible I would also recommend the pelagic night dive. It's a shallow dive over approx. 2000 ft water. You will see amazing bioluminescent larval forms and deep sea critters that only come in to shallow water at...

Is it possible to do a Manta dive if staying on Oahu or Maui?

This is my manta dive at Kona a couple of years ago. It's well worth the effort. Having a 16' "wingspan" manta pass a few inches over your head is an awesome experience.
