I borrowed a TPII from my LDS for a weekend and did not like enough to purchase one. Since then I bought a Transplate with STA and the Oxycheq 30lb Signature wing -- it is the most comfortable rig I have ever used in 20 years of diving.
Here is an anecdote that may help to shed some light on the weight belt vs. integrated and/or non-ditchable weights discussion. I was snorkeling to a dive site with a 14 year old diver who was wearing gear that he had rented from a reputable dive operator. Suddenly he began to sink...
Final score: going with Dive Rite Transplate and the 30lb Oxy wing. I am grateful to MSilvia, to the fantastic staff at Hollywood Divers in LA, and to all of the other freaks on this board who contributed so generously to this thread.
Can anybody refer me to somebody in the Los Angeles area who is expert at rigging Dive Rite harnesses? You know, kind of like a tailor who does custom alterations. Many thanks.
This was my first post. I am delighted by the enthusiasm if somewhat surprised by the intensity of the replies. For most of us, diving is recreation and the rest of life already has plenty of conflict. The ocean is big enough for backplates and bc’s.
Thanks for the help. I am a strictly recreational, single tank kind of guy for various reasons, some physical. All I want is to have fun looking at the pretty stuff underwater. I dive mostly California but some warmer waters too. I would like to have one rig that does it all.
Greetings. I am bucking the trend toward back plates and wings by going go with a Nighthawk. Dive instruction preaches "comfort and fit" come first, so for me, wings take second place.
