Teaching theory to a person with learning difficulties.

Does anyone have any solid advice or references as to how to get the entry level theory over to a student with significant learning difficulties? There is family support I can take advantage of, the father is being trained as well. This is a person who is very good in the water, pretty calm and...

Bollocks talked about computer algorithms. Aka how to bend an Oceanic VT3

Can I say bollocks? Never mind… Short version - do not use NDL times to compare computer conservatism. Long version… I recently acquired an AI transmitter for my Perdix. It came with a free Oceanic VT3. The seller thought it was the other way round so I got “a deal”. Yesterday, I had no...

    pDCS=0.66 use deco gas?

Suppose a dive profile has a pDCS of 1.33 on best mix. Suppose that getting bent is very bad with a 50% chance of death due to location etc. Would you do this dive or use a deco mix to reduce the pDCS?

    Scapa on the telly

BBC Scotland - How Scotland Works, Series 2, Scotland the Wild, The historic wrecked WW1 ships of Scapa Flow This is four years old but was repeated tonight. USA people probably need a VPN to see the full piece, but it is worth a look. Emily’s boat is not typical of Scapa but the people and...

    Weather and stop depths.

Barometric pressure in London 'highest in 300 years' at least London breaks a high-pressure record At the weekend it 1050 mb in London (and probably Chepstow) while 970 in Iceland. That is the best part of a metre of difference. Since final stops are at 1300 mb vs 1000ish expected at the...

Buhlmann vs GF vs the blokes with goats

From another thread... The stuff above is actually the basis of all the dissolved gas models going back to the early 20th C. Also the models in the Zoop and the like. What makes Buhlmann ZHL16C is a specific set of value s of a and b which encode the sixteen tissue compartments. Those values...

    CCTV on boats

In another thread the idea of using CCTV on boats for fire detection came up. There were a load of objections from practical issues of retrofitting wiring to privacy concerns. So where is it common to have CCTV on boats? Several local (U.K.) boats use it, watching the dive deck, giving a better...

    Typical liveaboards.

I was surprised to see the configuration of the boat in the Channel Islands fire. I suppose we all take our familiar configurations for granted. I am starting a thread with the hope people can describe what is typical in their personal experience.

    Oceanic Alpha 9 front covers

Does anyone happen to have a box of front covers (aka purge buttons) for Alpha 9 second stages? We have a bunch of regulators becoming useless due to failure of these. Ken

    Turn pressures

I have had several people, in two contexts, suggest that a turn or turnaround pressure of a 100 bar is a thing. Does anyone have practical examples of when that would be the case in simple single tank diving?

What will you dive when the coral is gone?

I have a quandary about pushing my son to go diving (a bad thing) and him missing seeing what there is left. I am certain he will not get to show any child of his the stuff we take for granted. Coral reefs head for 'knock-out punch' Which links Spatial and temporal patterns of mass bleaching...

    Bailout setttings suggestion.

This is a not so easy suggestion... When diving CCR mode bailing out is an extreme event and a bailed out ascent ought to be rare. As such using different GF settings may be appropriate. Could there be two sets of settings? I realise this may lead to confusion so is not easy to implement...

    15 second TIME indicator

Currently it is possible to time ascents by using the progression of underscore characters below the TIME label. This is best done by choosing the start of the minute - i.e. when all the ____ vanish. Sometimes though that is not convenient. I find telling the difference between one and two...

    Buoyancy characteristics of kit.

I decided not to post of the recent Eagles Nest accident thread as really this isn't about that but might help some people with stuff they might not get to try for themselves. Maybe others can add interesting factoids. I dive a JJ. It is easily 10kg, maybe 12kg, negative with the standard SS...

    Air consumption rates.

On this board it seems common to see claims of surface equivalent air consumption (SAC or RMV depending on who you ask) of the order or 0.3 cuft/minute or about 9l/minute. I have previously measured by own rate sat on the sofa and get something between 9 and 10 l/minute. My lowest whole dive...

    Tapatalk

Can we have it back please? Or some similar app based viewing solution. Either you have dropped it because you are unable to support it technically or because it steals your advertising revenue. SB down times

I get the feeling you do regular site maintenance at about 7am UTC on Sunday mornings. Maybe also Good Friday mornings.... Do you need to take the site down so often? That lands right about when I am having a coffee (assuming I haven't got up already to go diving). Ken

    iOS app for Petrel 2

I have a Petrel 2 coming soon. I'd like to use an iPad to talk to it. I see that a compatible Bluetooth profile is now supported but I can't find a app which understands the Petrel. How is this supposed to be used?

    DSMB colour

What are the DSMB colour conventions in Cozumel? In the uk the normal boring marker to do stops or a drift under is orange or red. The something exciting and probably not altogether good is happening one is yellow. Then there can be yellow and red ones for people who should have known better in...
