Certified and excited…from the diving Mecca of Phoenix, Arizona

Rocky Point is warm warm warm, at least in August. I wore a dive skin and didn't need a wetsuit at all. And just FYI, Lake UnPleasant can be downright chilly, yo. I did my drysuit cert there in late January 2000. The water temp was 55F on the surface.

I originally used...um...unlined gloves of some sort... *checks logbook* A 4th Element glove of some kind, that's all the info I've got. They were thick latex, IIRC. Dexterity was great, but the gloves themselves weren't exactly robust. I started looking to change, so I read other people's...

I did the first but not the second. I'll try that trick when I replace the gloves.

I tried the Rolock 90 blue rings with two types of lined gloves: Showa 620 (orange) and 660 (blue). With the 620s, the fit is OK-not-great; the ring is super-snug and a real SOB to remove. With the 660s, the fit is sucktastic; the ring is permanently attached. I honestly think I'mma have to...

Anyone use a Santi Heated Vest with their Fourth Element Undersuits?

I'll reply, but I'm somewhat of a n00b at using heated undergarments. Regarding layering, my electric undergarment is a Light Monkey heater base. It's essentially an undershirt, so I use it as a bottom layer and then put my fluffy layer over top. Regarding when to run the heat, that decision...

    Channel Islands in October

Most of my early diving was done off the Channel Islands, via three- or four-day boat trips. I always wore a 5mm wetsuit, but then I got smart and switched to a drysuit. It made a big difference, especially by the trip's end. Were I in your booties -- doing repetitive dives over a week -- I'd...

    Factory-fit vs aftermarket dry gloves?

I've had the opposite experience; I can easily change out my gloves with Ultima rings, but once I have gloves installed in the Rolock 90s, they're IN THERE.

Such sad news... My best wishes go out to the Dive Rite team and the Hires family.

How do I overcome seasickness on boat dives without medication?

Ginger-based foods are highly effective, in my experience. You can buy anti-nausea pills based on ginger, and you can also drink ginger beer. (In case you're unfamiliar with this product, it's nonalcoholic soda pop loaded with ginger. It's much stronger-flavored than ginger ale, which may or may...

    Review Seaskin Nova drysuit

TiZip (most likely the plastic zipper's manufacturer) sells a branded product that's available through Dive Right In Scuba for $15 a tube, but Wal-Mart's online store has something that looks identical at $5 a tube. You'll only need to lube the zipper every now and then; I do mine maybe twice...

The short answer is yes. You can use latex seals with the Si-Tech oval rings. You'll install latex seals the same way as you would silicone seals, but you won't have a handy-dandy ridge on the seal that will fit nicely into the ring system's grooves and hold the seal in place. That being said...

Newbie questions about BP/W and how to set it up?

Soft disagree. I've used the plates and done the bungee-only method. The plastic plate makes strapping on weights much easier, and the weights tend to stay in place better. And the plates prevent the harness web from folding.

Seaskin Nova Suit with Extra Thick Undergarments option

You're describing me. I dive a Seaskin Nova with a Halo AR and a baselayer. Most recently, I've tried a "Rocky" brand 250-gram baselayer, but I've also used a Smartwool merino set of long johns. I'm also considering using the Smartwool baselayer with a Light Monkey heated shirt. I ordered my...

Equipment A Dive to Remember: Overcoming Technical Hurdles with Teamwork

If you put the bubbles beneath the diver, then maybe what you're saying is accurate. But if you put the bubble storm at the diver's same level or above the diver, that bubble storm creates an upwelling that can take the diver along for a ride. Much the same thing happened to me while simulating...

    Review Seaskin Nova drysuit

I didn't have any print instructions with my Rolocks (got 'em secondhand, so dunno if they even come with print docs), so I watched the online video instructions. Like Litefoot, I found the video to be vague about the seals' positioning, but what's more, the video was also vague about which way...

I've had the tab rip out on other suits, but not on my old Seaskin, and I used that thing for quite a few years. Perhaps the Seaskin's plastic zipper was the difference? As for reinforcing the tab, I'd say no. I suspect that anything I tried would end up weakening it.

How Many Dives in a year will make you happy?

My answer? As many as I can get. I'm not looking to dive every day of every weekend, but if I can hit the water almost every Saturday during the open season and get at least a few dives in over the winter, I can live with that.
