Drift Diving - anything to it? (in FL)

Yes, that's right - I don't have my own tanks, weights, BCD, and regulator. The prices I've mentioned include rental equipment which adds an additional $25-40 or so. It's almost like skiing when you have to decide between (1) biting the bullet and buying your own equipment or (2) to keep on...

Drift Diving - anything to it? (in FL)

Cool. Thanks everyone. Now that you've thoroughly freaked me out  (just kidding), I think I will get a DM to go in with us. A couple of places said they can throw an entire package together for $85 or less. I'm sure it'll be money well spent.

Drift Diving - anything to it? (in FL)

Are you recommending Diveseahorse? This is a useful site too (and it may be along the way of where I want to eventually go, which is towards Miami and Key Largo). I wonder if they rent equipment. The total cost of Splashdown (including rental) seems a bit pricier than other outfits. Maybe...

Florida, so many places and so little time.

Pelican, huh? Do they provide BCD, regulator, tanks, weight rentals also? They seem like nice people, even offering to give us a guided tour for our first dive (I'm assuming free?). If they don't rent, where can we rent? Young

Drift Diving - anything to it? (in FL)

Hi, my wife and I are taking a trip to Boynton Beach (for work) and Key Largo, FL. I keep hearing about this drift diving in the Boynton area. Is there anything to it? My wife and I are fairly new divers (about 10 dives each in the cold Chicagoland lakes and warm/deep Asian oceans) and am...

Too Skinny for wetsuit, Henderson sizes

I'm trying to remember off the top of my head, but I believe companies like Bare and Xcel offer a size called Medium-Tall. I know Xcel offers sizes in general for hard to fit people. Also, you could always go custom like Atlan, Rubatex, Liquidfit. Min price there is about $300 or so. Good luck!

Too Skinny for wetsuit, Henderson sizes

My wife could not fit into anything made by East Coast companies like Henderson or Harvey. She is 5'8.5" and 115lbs. She barely made it into a size 6 O'Neill which was barely tall and tight enough. But we just tried it this weekend and it worked! I hear Body Glove makes wetsuits for taller...

    What makes a wetsuit "semi-dry"?

Does blindstitching and gluing cause it? A dry-suit zipper? What makes some suits leak through the seams (like the Tilos rental I used this weekend) while others don't. The LDS owner told me the thicker O'Neills are semi-dry although I'm not sure if it is advertised as such. I don't...

    Layering: does 3mm + 2mm = 5mm of warmth?

quote... (1) I'd say definitely not - in fact I would probably refuse to buddy someone who dived with a 3mm shorty in 50 deg water as I'd be worried I'd have to be dealing with their hypothermia. I'm sure there are some tough people who can take it, but that's pretty extreme. I totally...

    Layering: does 3mm + 2mm = 5mm of warmth?

OK, on a related note... (1) I'm thinking about getting a 5mm full suit. Do you think that plus a 3mm shorty will give me enough insulation for 50-55 deg F? (2) Or can you even layer a 3mm full suit over a 5mm full suit and have that give me enough insulation in the aforementioned...

Atlan is a very high quality suit maker - you're actually very lucky to be in Canada for this reason. Check out... http://atlaninc.com Good luck!

    Layering: does 3mm + 2mm = 5mm of warmth?

When layering wetsuits, does a 3mm fullsuit + a 2mm vest or shorty have the same insulating value as a 5mm (in those layers where the material is doubled)? Or does a 3mm farmer john + 3mm jacket give you the equivalent warmth of 6mm around the torso and upper legs? (You get the idea). Or...

    O'Neill 5 or 5/3mm purchase online?

Does anyone know of a place I can affordably purchase an O'Neill 5 or 5/3mm wetsuit online? A lot of places seem to just sell the 3mm and can't even order it for some reason. This is for my wife who happens to only fit in O'Neill size 6 because she's tall and skinny. Thanks for your help.
