Yes, in my PADI Rescue Class I tried going down to approach the "drowning victim" from underneath , but, my instructor made it harder by turning to face me , and because I was not directly underneath him I had a circle to swim while he only had to pivot in place .. wore me completely out ;) ...

I would think that with the power of sun behind it, red reflector would be plenty bright and easily seen during the daytime, and would certainly stand out in a sea of silver reflections ... using it to reflect a light at night might be less visible, that part I am unsure of

A tight focus with little spill , 3* to 18* adjustable beam .. I like it :) I had one of packhorse modded lights with a 5* beam and it was awesome for the usually poor visibility conditions here , but it finally flooded and was not recoverable :(
