Indeed, it is a fairly simple process. I know how to do it 😁
The real issue has to do with accurately diagnosing a problem and coming up with a solution in a high stress stress situation.
Like I said, I was swimmingly along at 60 feet and took in a mouthfull of water causing me to gag / seal...
The length of a breath hold was about the time to react to a problem and make a decision. It was not about an emergency ascent.
Swallowing the water was something I saw elsewhere as a possible solution to water in your regulator. Has nothing to do with emergency ascent.
Responding to L - I am...
Two other items:
1) Is it feasible to inflate your BC to accelerate an ascent while exhaling?
- can the BC burst or will it vent itself
- and then there is the issue of DCS
2) Someone on another thread mentioned deliberately swallowing the water in your regulator (assuming you couldn’t or...
A simple layman’s experiment: Breathe normally. After your next exhale hold your breath and see how long you last.
My results:
0-10 seconds - no problem
10-15 - getting uncomfortable
15-25 - holding on
25-30 - gotta take a breath
So I would estimate you have about 10-15 seconds to think...
My thoughts in the moment on deciding not to go for the surface
1) I remember looking up and seeing the surface and thinking: “that’s a lot of water to move through. I‘ll run out of air” and drown. Remember I wasn’t operating from a full lung of air. More like 1/4 or less, whatever the...
I
I don’t believe I was ever shown this in any of my training.
Frankly, I don’t understand this bit or the mechanics of the regulator itself. I’ll do a little research and see what I can figure out.
Basically, it’s been: breathe here, make sure air is coming out, and know how to switch to...
Thanks for all the input.
It was quite a scary moment for me.
I’m not happy with the dive shop for the lack of maintenance on their gear. But being rusty on the basic skills, not taking a refresher, etc. is on me.
I think the physical exertion of kicking through 60 feet of water without new air would have been quite difficult. Heck, I thought it was going to be challenging (but doable) just to make it over to the nearest diver!
Had an incident today that shook me up a little bit. Trying to understand how it happened, how to avoid it, and what the best solution would have been.
By way of background: I have my AOW and just over 100 dives under my belt. But it has been close to 2 years since my last dive.
I’m on...
In La Ventana (about 1 hour south of La Paz) to do some windsurfing and kiting. Would like to get in at least 1 day of diving nearby.
Looks like the options are 1) locally at La Ventana 2) north to La Paz 3) south to Cabo Pulmo. If you had one day to dive, where would you go?
(I have a...
PLEASE BE AWARE:
The original post is from March 1, 2015.
Cape Anne Divers has gone out of business.
Per the announcements on their website:
November 12, 2017
Gloucester, Massachusetts
Cape Ann Divers, Ltd. is permanently closing their brick and mortar store, and discontinuing their SCUBA...
Would love to do at least one day of diving this summer.
Currently reside in Portland, Maine.
I'm willing to drive a couple of hours, camp, spend the weekend.
Although I am an experienced diver, I have been strictly a vacation diver and do not own any of my own equipment.
I recently moved back to New England and am looking for a dive shop that offers rental equipment and guided dives (shore dive or charter). Preferably in Maine or Massachusetts, but...
I did my AOW and Rescue in Utila at UDC but not with Andy.
Was alerted to his passing through diving friends on FB. All I could find on the story was this article
Acclaimed Instructor Trainer Andy Phillips Dies in St. Lawrence River Dive
Key point: he passed away in the St. Lawrence River in...
So glad to have run across this thread.
Just got back from a dive trip to Mexico with a sinus infection and swollen tonsils. Trying to figure out what happened and this was helpful.
In retrospect, I'm pretty sure I weakened my immune system getting down there. Had a bad connection/layover...
Utila, Roatan, Belize are all good. Caribbean side. Warm water, good visibility.
Costa Rica (on the Pacific side) has a chance for bigger animals. But colder and vis not as good.
In Panama on the Pacific side there is a marine park called Coiba, which is supposed to be quite good.
