    New to scuba

I second taking a discover course before you go on your cruise. It will train your brain that it is possible to breath underwater and should eliminate some of the anxiety of a new experience. Being a good swimmer isn't really necessary to dive but being comfortable in and around water is.

DSD Fatality suit. Brooks v. PADI

Not joking and I agree 100% that LDS and instructors make very little money and I don't really understand why you all do it. However my point was regarding stupid lawsuits and personal responsibility.

DSD Fatality suit. Brooks v. PADI

What's great is we can all have our opinions and make choices for ourselves. I don't feel dive training is inexpensive at all, not where I live. At our LDS OW will run about $700, AOW $500, EAN $200. I can't think of a hobby type activity were it costs close to what dive training costs. Diving...

    Air Consumption

I pretty much stopped caring how long I can make a tank last or if I can cut a pound or two of weight. About the only thing I do care about is did my buddy and I have fun. That being said; Somewhere around dive #30, I figured out that "breath normal" isn't possible when you actually think...

DSD Fatality suit. Brooks v. PADI

So THIS is an example of why SCUBA training costs as much as it does. I didn't read every word and wouldn't understand most of it anyway but looks like throwing stuff at a wall to see if it sticks and turns into cash.

About to be fitted for tank/ow dives

Aside from what most folks have mentioned, don't buy anything just yet. An opinion as a novice diver (around 100 dives) I think the jacket BDC's are easier to learn buoyancy control. Also I'm a vacation diver so if I would do it all over again My priorities would be a BDC specifically made for...

    Lake Phoenix Death

This is second hand info from a member of the dive club involved with finding him: (I wasn't there) Based on what apparently was found on the guys Gopro, he was free diving the plane. When he was found floating at the surface by a group that had just come up some to get to warmer water after...

What to wear immediately after a dive?

From an older dude's perspective: I personally believe women think about this stuff way too hard, but according to my wonderful, lovely, beautiful, smart, funny wife "men are simple creatures" If I see a women at the bar with wet spots on her shirt and/or shorts, I just think "cool she just got...

What’s the future for California dive boats?

To add few thoughts regarding the posts about fire sprinklers. 1) fire sprinklers are designed to save lives, give people in a burning building time and not designed to save property. 2) the first responders are also given some time to enter a building where a sprinkler system has slowed down...

What’s the future for California dive boats?

I work in the commercial building industry. In most cases the International Building Code requires commercial structures intending to be sleeping quarters to have automatic fire sprinklers. I could see the US adapting something similar in commercial boats. Fire sprinklers saves lives and many...

Legal considerations for the Fire on dive boat Conception in CA

Sure the optics are awful but here in the USA it's a culture we unfortunately live in. Heck we don't have a clue what the cause even is, funerals haven't taken place but the lawyers are flying to CA by the hundreds, maybe thousands. This is all about the Owner's insurance company trying to get...

    Considering a new dive computer..

Very lazy vacation diver here, I go slow, don't log all my dives, I don't generally go deep, more than three dives in a single day wears me out so we tend to do two tanks a day, we may spend the day at the bars instead of diving. So I'm one that could do without a comp and do some simple table...

Fire on dive boat Conception in CA

Why do you say "Has nothing to do with this fire" Have I missed something regarding the cause?

Fire on dive boat Conception in CA

I don't post much just read to try to learn something. For me; the learning part in this horrible tragedy is the cause of the fire. My opinion is; as fast as this fire spread, over a large area, this has some appearance of an electrical fire, similar in how RV's burn to the ground in minutes...

Florida Keys, Best Dive center/boat and the best Reef to dive

I dove various sites in the Islemorada area and I enjoyed them just as much a Largo. Alligator is one of my favorites. I've been down maybe 6 times and haven't been to the same spot more than once. Davis is another good one. I recall the boat rides being around 30+ min.

    Shell collectors ?

I'm not judging or anything like that but I'm a firm believer in the principals of Leave No Trace. The only thing I ever take is something that was put there by man. I'm also one of those guys that will swim, paddle, hike out of my way to pick up a piece of trash. I'm not a "tree hugger" but I...

Florida Keys, Best Dive center/boat and the best Reef to dive

The family has nothing but good things to say about Horizon Divers but we aren't "needy" type people. Give us a pleasant, knowledgeable crew, a safe boat and gear and all is good. The best thing I liked about Horizon is their boat is docked on the Atlantic side so the rides to most sites are...

As a New Diver, Where to Invest Money First

I'm pretty much a novice, vacation diver. I've found that I only dive on vacations and taking my own BCD and Regs is a pain. I would much rather rent than carry/check them on a plane. I usually take my own mask, fins, snorkel, computer and sometimes a wet suit. I've sometimes left my fins at...

What Do the OW Checkout Dives Consist Of?

From the best I can tell my instructors don't fit the mold of the typ. instructor. The OW dives were really a lot of fun with skills thrown in. It's been a while but I recall most dives started with the basic "life safety" type skills and generally getting the class comfortable in their new...

    White house Jamaica

My wife and I went to Sandals WH about a year and a half ago. Great place, nothing we didn't like. The trip from the airport to WH is a pretty long drive but great to see the small towns and countryside. The dive shop is very well run and staffed with folks that really understand about taking...
