    snorkeling breath holding

I enjoy freediving/snorkeling. I have beliefs but I can't tell you what is right for you. For example: I don't believe in any type of "breathe up", as they may be just another way to hyperventilate, which I believe is unnecessary and dangerous. Also I believe in an adequate surface interval...

    Peeing Etiquette

My wife took me on a vacation to Ghana (her second time there). Bathroom facilities are not the same as the U.S., and for a woman it can be an additional challenge. But, she was prepared this time. For this trip, she brought a couple of the "she-pee" type products, which, in short, allow those...

    How Did You Go Solo?

My life has often been about doing what made me happy as a child, but in a more expensive and extreme way. I started swimming regularly after I got a place near the beach, then one payday I picked up some snorkeling kit. It was about spearfishing and lobsters for a while. Then, I ran into some...

Where to buy a lobstering kit?

LDS for the gage and catch bag(s), stencils for painting the flag, and I'm using mailbox stickers on plastic from a 2 liter. 3" high by 1/2" wide numbers for both flag and tanks! I prefer the "swat" method over bringing a stick. Also, you can lanyard the bag. Don't let your flag float away...

Women and everything being heavy in scuba diving

I read all the posts, great thread. We train inexperienced people at the machine shop I work at to be skilled machinists. Regardless of gender, if a newer employee is relatively short, we can get them a moveable stepping platform; if they don't have the arm strength to torque something...

why the "LP" versus "HP" service pressure rating in the US?

Machinist here - nice read, thank you.

Free flow bodge good or not?

That's fair enough, but in hindsight, I'd be asking, "was that the most safe option, equally as safe an option, or less safe option?" My personal answer would be, in my judgement, less safe option, and therefore maybe fall into the do not repeat category, and maybe learn a better option from...

Free flow bodge good or not?

I want to hear what more experienced divers will say, but I would: Try to stop the free flow by making sure the reg is mouthpiece down, maybe try purging (I'm assuming no adjust screws or levers on this reg) If that didn't work, the dive is over, go to the pony, close the valve on the main...

How to not overheat on surface swims

I have enjoyed this thread - I have traveled to La Jolla for work, and done a few dives there. I look forward to returning! I can't add anything to the suggestions, but I wanted to comment on the shallows. (Early morning or night dives maybe, but then how would you get your line ups on a night...

Requirement to "remove and replace" scuba unit and weight system for dry suit cert.

Second to this, the same goes for kayak diving. It seems like if you're paying for a class, that would be a worthwhile item to include.

Requirement to "remove and replace" scuba unit and weight system for dry suit cert.

Donning and doffing has come in useful for me. My scuba unit is too heavy for me to climb a ladder unassisted, but if I remove the rig, clip it off to a line, and then come aboard the boat, I can then pull my unit over the side. With regard to buoyancy, as I learn to improve my buoyancy...

If you weren't addicted to diving...

I used to mountain bike, but I got injured a couple times in a row due to parts in disrepair, inadequate safety wear, and riding beyond my abilities! I was short on the funding required for the first two causes. Now, I have the funds, but I spend that time diving. If I couldn't dive, I think...

    Twin cylinders??

Agree with everything except having the reg in mouth at all times while on the surface. Do I misunderstand your statement, or am I wrong? Sincere learner here...

Cannot find a reason for AOW certification

There isn't much to an OW class, so I shortly thereafter threw down another 500 USD for the AOW. It was useful. I had maybe 10-15 dives at the time, and I benefited from the extension of the OW class. Fun with navigation, night dive, lift bag, boat dive, and a deep dive, with an instructor...

Dry suit - check list to avoid getting wet

In addition to the above, my drysuit, a Viking Pro, has an inflator valve that screws together, the two pieces inside and outside the suit. Since it screws together, it is possible for it to be loose, so after an occasion when water entered that way, I always make sure to check that. As for...

    Give up my primary regulator???

Back to another point by the OP, I wanted to point out that I have seen US Navy sailors filling tanks, and from what I have been told, the J-Valve is required. So... it's not completely retired. ;) That's probably just because it takes ... 'an act of congress' to adjust their rules, though.

    LGBTQ Divers?

I both love SCUBA, freediving, and the like, and also am bisexual. It's good to see that most of the divers on here don't want to exclude anyone based on something that is completely irrelevant to our common activity. Additionally, this is a good thread because of the context of the society...

Advice: hitting the ground running, or biting off more than I can chew?

I am from MA, but have dived La Jolla, while out there for work, a few times. Scuba is very popular out there, it seems like a great scene. As for La Jolla shore, there's variable surf, variable viz, sand gradually sloping out to the canyon, which gets very deep. The water is cool. La Jolla...

    Diving in New Hampshire?

I leave in MA, just south of the NH seacoast, and would be glad to dive with anyone in that area. The Piscataqua is some interesting diving if you like old artifacts, as it's been dumped into for hundreds if years, but as mentioned above, dives are carefully timed around slackwater. Second to...

How those idiots (us) run out of air

Hey, wow, this is my second post. Being pretty new (47 dives), I've just been lurking... I recently did a dive in the Piscataqua River that is relevant to this topic. Dives in the river are often timed around slack water, as this 98% salt water river's currents are tidal. I actually found...
