AP Valves/Diving Emergency Tanks of the Buddy Commando

The Buddy Commando is a model of BCD. It used to be ubiquitous amongst UK divers. They're practically indestructible, and actually have a NATO stock number, as they are military issue. They are also capable of mounting a twin set.

    Stainless Steel or Titanium

I use a Spyderco knife with H1 steel. Holds an edge better than Ti, can't rust.

    Folding diving knife

I've been using an Atlantic Salt as my primary dive knife for over a decade. Almost all my dives are in salt water, and salt water in the Arabian gulf is very salty... There is not a speck of rust anywhere on the knife. I don't even have to rinse it off. As for storage while diving, It's either...

People embarrassed to do pre dive buddy check?

If someone is so disinterested in basic safety to do basic pre-entry checks, and gear familiarization, I don't want to dive with them.

People embarrassed to do pre dive buddy check?

I've been diving since the early 90s. I always buddy check. Diving with friends, that I've dived with a hundred times? Buddy check. Diving with an instabudy I've just met on holiday? Buddy check. The life you save may be your own. It doesn't take long, and I can't count the amount of times that...

Do you turn the air off or leave it on after setting up on a tank?

Once I Set up my rig, I turn it off and leave it. Any leaks will show up as a drop in pressure on the gauge. The cylinder gets turned on and checked as part of the pre dive buddy checks.

    BC Remove and Replace Skill

I was taught it during my novice 1 training with BSAC, many years ago. I had to use it in anger during a dive in Egypt with rental gear where a cylinder came free from the cam band during a dive (It was correctly threaded, I'd pre-wetted the band, and it still came loose). I took off my BCD...

    cold water quarry diving

Get a drysuit. Seriously. Early in my diving career, I was living in North Wales. We used to dive in quarries in the winter when the sea was too rough to launch the RIB safely. I dived Dorothea quarry in November, the water temp was about 3 degrees C. It was snowing when I got out, and my...

    Opinions on Cruise SAD Kit?

I take a box of o rings, a couple of Schrader valves with the insertion tool (Doesn't look like a tool, it's quite innocuous) silicone grease, a hank of micro cord, and a couple of feet of 4mm bungee. I use a neoprene mask strap and spring fins/full foot fins these days, so no need for spare straps.

    ARE FULL-FACE SNORKEL MASKS SAFE???

While I was on holiday in Sharm el Sheikh a few years ago, I witnessed three serious incidents with snorkellers using full face masks. One of which involved the snorkel portion coming loose and the mask completely filling with water. They're not safe.

    First time going to Sharm

If you only do one dive in the Red Sea, ever, it should be the Thistlegorm. I've been to Sharm several times, the diving is fantastic.

    Big thanks to Suunto.

To be fair, Suunto could have shunted the problem over to UPS, who I would have had to claim from, then I would have had to buy a replacement transmitter. Instead they just sent me a new one, and I had it in hand three days after it was reported missing, half way around the world.

    Big thanks to Suunto.

They certainly have. I’ll not be back there. There are other dive shops I can go to.

    Big thanks to Suunto.

As everyone who dives a Suunto Computer with a transmitter is no doubt aware, there was a recall of the transmitters due to a potential issue. Due to me being overseas, and not having a reliable dealer to return it to, I had to wait until I was back in the UK to send it off. This meant a bit of...

Cylinder type and proper weighting (SPLIT FROM 'Pull Dumps - Lose them')

I have a couple of their jackets, they are, or were ubiquitous in UK diving. The stuff is bombproof with a life time warranty. You can even breathe off the jackets, adding air as required from the emergency cylinder. I've been using my Commando since 1993, still good as new.

Have you ever had to doff and don your rig while diving?

As with a few of the posters, I was diving on holiday with a rental BC. The strap for my cylinder stretched slightly and the cylinder slipped down. I took it off and reset it at about 10m without problems. It's one of the skills we used to practice during my Novice Diver training. My current BC...

    World's First Artificial Gills Re-breather

I suspect this will be vapourware. I heard about this a while back and ran the numbers, there is no way it can possibly work. An inconvenient fact is still a fact.
