Another Drowning at Monastery Beach . . .

Monastery is a great beach for trained swimmers and divers. It is a steep beach, with a very short and dramatic break, and there are plenty of rips. It is not a beach on which children should frolic in the surf. The water is cold and the waves jump up and grab the unsuspecting. This is a...

How common is it for people to use first and second stages from different manufacturers?

Mostly, there's no problem mixing. The one thing you need to be mindful of is the intermediate pressure. Poseidon regs, for example, operate with a higher intermediate pressure. Their first stages are finicky when used with second stages that expect a lower intermediate pressure. Poseidon is...

For Sale Halcyon Doubles Rig- Never Used

Hey folks, In 2014 my buddy and I were getting ready for tech diving. He got sick and I never took the course. I'm ready to part with my doubles rig. It's located in Santa Cruz California. I'd like to sell it within a 100 mile radius if possible, and I'd like to sell the wing, plate, tanks...

Why not go to 100' ?

Nothing bad happened, just a stream of bubbles from the side of the regulator were the reg attached to the LP hose. I could still breathe the reg. Yes, the O-ring was fine before the dive. It was fine at the surface. It was fine on descent. But it was pinched. What I learned is that a...

Why not go to 100' ?

Diving deep is easy and fun- until it isn't. Have you ever dealt with a burst o ring while in the water? I did, on my fifth dive after certification, right after buying my brand new regulators. I was in about fifteen feet of water and it was a bummer because it ended a day of diving. On...

Fins: Full Foot or Open Heel?

If you dive cold water and use a dry suit, you will be using a fin with an open back.

Need to repair my drysuit ASAP

Some other field repairs for your consideration: If the tear is not at the edge of the seal, then simply use duct tape inside and out. I've done this when some sunscreen got on a neck seal and ate a hole in the bellows of the neck. Another thing that will fix small holes is the material from...

Justifying a dry suit or not

Like the OP, I dive in the SF and Monterey bay areas. In the winter, the water gets to about 45F, which is pretty cold for a 7mm wet suit. That said, there is another reason to get a dry suit. Some dives just aren't safe in a wet suit. For my money, anything deeper than 100fsw pretty much...

Who does not like their Hog regs?

I like mine. I have them on my singles wing and my doubles set. They work great and haven't let me down in over a hundred dives thus far.

    What ever happened to Beuchat?

My LDS carries Beuchat. I just bought a pair of Beuchat Mundial free diving fins. Maybe they aren't the most popular, but they are still around and they make very nice foot pockets.

    My sausage needs Viagra

Regarding the OP, if your sausage is going limp, have a go at the dump valves. If they are dirty, you aren't going to want to use your sausage at all, and it will surely go limp and ruin your day. Clean that thing up, keep it ready and you will have many rewards. I'll just share with you the...

Diving Dry, is it worth it?

If you will be diving deep diving dry is pretty much required.

At what percentage of nitrox does combustion really become a concern?

Note that unless your local dive shop has banked Nitrox, they will do partial pressure blending. This means that your tank and it's valve will be exposed to 100% oxygen during the fill. 100% O2 is always worth thinking about as a combustion hazard :)

    Dive Fitness... Would you?

Absolutely- a set of P90X3 DVDs work great for some folks. Crossfit classes work for some folks. For me, I need to have an appointment or I seem to put off going to the gym. Also, I find the social aspect of working out with a tribe to be very motivational. I tried Crossfit, but I'm a bit...
