    Whale watching?

We're going to be on Tahiti at the very end of October and Bora Bora in early November. We were looking for activities for non-diving days, and we saw that the humpback whales are in the area "into October". Are they usually still there at the end of October, or not? If we were to go whale...

Announcing the SubGravity H3 - Powered by SeaBear

I'm a newish (50-dives) recreational diver and have used the H3 on a couple of dives so far. I love the small size, light weight, and bright, clear screen. IMHO, the form factor is better than the larger, heavier Petrel 2 (which my husband uses). I won't be using it as a watch, but it's...

Is this a crazy idea or am I over reacting?

I've heard from Scubaboard and some other places that bubbles ascend at about 60 ft/minute: Scuba Diving Bubble Mechanics If you have a line to ascend on, it's easy to stay at 30 ft/min. Get neutral and hover. Take a deep breath in, let the air in your lungs move you up 1-2 feet. Breathe...

Is this a crazy idea or am I over reacting?

I recently did a manta ray dive where we were literally holding onto heavy rocks to stay in one place despite the surge that was trying to push us around. One lady's computer kept beeping at her. We eventually figured out it was her fast ascent warning. She wasn't moving, but the water column...

Where/how should I tether my console?

If it did, we'd all be wearing a version of the Zeagle Zena, because mine simply unzips in the front. :D Or you can un-clip the shoulders and sides, pull the whole front off, and slide out the side. But it doesn't really make a big difference.

New Divers...Don't forget this before you hit the water!

See this previous thread about chamber and transportation costs. Yowee! http://www.scubaboard.com/forums/diving-medicine/461810-decompression-chamber-treatment-cost.html

    nose breather

*Shrug* To each his/her own. I had trouble with the airway control aspect of snorkeling, and when I started the OW course I had trouble with airway control there. A couple of hours in the pool doing exactly what I described got me to the point where I can snorkel and scuba dive confidently...

    nose breather

The standard scuba/snorkel mask will let you breathe out through your nose, but it won't let you breathe *in* through your nose because the nose pocket is sealed. Are you a decent swimmer? Ever tried snorkeling? How did it go? Here are a couple of things you can try cheaply and easily, to...

Where/how should I tether my console?

I'm going to add another vote for the retractor, and/or for getting the compass onto your wrist. I have an SPG + compass + depth gauge on my console, and a wrist computer. The console has a retractor on it similar to the one in diversteve's post. I clip my console across to the right chest...

November Trip to Maui: Help needed in planning trip to another island?

The Manta Ray night dive is EPIC and truly not to be missed. Having wild but gentle creatures that are twice as wide as a person is tall swimming within inches of you, and then doing acrobatics in the water column, is thrilling. Add in the bright lights that look a bit like a laser show, and...

    shark diving. Am I qualified?

I did my first-ever dive to 30m with a mild current, immediately after AOW but with only 12 dives to my name, with nothing scary in the water. I sucked air so fast that my entire dive only lasted 15 minutes! If you're anywhere near as much of an air hog as I was, that would be a very expensive...

    British Splendour with Under Pressure-Video

Nice! Plenty to see there. I love the synchronized swimming of bait fish. It's nearly impossible to do it justice on video, but you caught some good bits on this video.

How many times a year you are going to scuba diving?

peter11, you've started a fun thread, but I'm still not sure what you're really asking about. Are you thinking about starting your own liveaboard company, or reselling liveaboard trips (like a travel agent)? We've never been on a liveaboard, but we'd like to do a liveaboard once per year...

    How to paint diving mask?

My husband and I use the Aqualung Micromask. It's a good, high-quality mask. Our scuba shop sold a lot of them.

    C - card question

Yeah, PADI uses special cards that have a battery embedded and a bluetooth transmitter. They also have to be shipped in special climate-controlled vans instead of a standard envelope. That's why the replacement cards, which appear to be normal plastic, cost $40.

    The best BCD for women!

I think the key is that it should be comfortable and really snug around your torso. I hate, hate, hate the way men's BCDs ride up around your neck and shoulders on the surface. The cummerbund always ended up under my boobs instead of around my waist or hips. Yuck! For this reason, I never use...

    OW certification questions

With the CESA, the one thing I've learned is that I have to let air out much more slowly than I initially thought. You can practice it on your couch: take a deep breath and try to breathe out for at least 30 seconds. Then relax for a couple of minutes and try again. I find that I definitely...

    C - card question

I have gone diving several times when only showing my Nitrox card, so that's not a bad idea. Having the Nitrox card implies that you also have OW. I think on the last dive the lady behind the counter would have preferred to see my AOW or Rescue card, because the trip required AOW, but she just...

Down Under Surf & Scuba is no more

The Down Under Divers Club has actually grown to 200 members in the last couple of weeks, and there were about 80 people at the last meeting. They've elected a new president, VP, and secretary/treasurer. The club has a really good chance of surviving this now. It has also been inspiring to...
