Best cheap sausage / signaling device?

The DAN signal tubes are great. I'd get one that has an open bottom so you can inflate it using your alternate airsource. Don't bother with the ones that you have to inflate by blowing. Those are a waste of your money.

New divers, considering trip to the Bay Islands 8/18 - 9/3

Deet or an anti-sand fly repellent. Citronella based products work fantastically. As an alternative, you can also use baby oil. Lots of it. The sandflies will actually drown in the oil, and won't get a chance to bite your legs as they did mine. :S

Activities in Utila for Non-Diver and after Dives

I agree. Right about this time through the end of Aug/September is their busy season, and the rooming that is offered at the Mango Inn is usually 4 beds per room, meaning 4 people + whoever they bring home for the night. Eek. I'd probably pay a little more and get your own room. But make sure...

    Photo's without post production

I do edit my photos, especially those taken underwater, especially since the lighting underwater can be very deceiving. What you see and what your camera sees are two very different things. So I usually take my photo in RAW format, so that when I'm working with it on photoshop, I have all the...

    Air Hog

I was told that your air consumption is not something that you can reduce DRASTICALLY. However, that said, the more often you dive, the better shape you're in, and the more comfortable you feel under water, the lower your air consumption is going to be. I'd also pay attention to fin kicks -...

Newbie questions regarding how wetsuits work

Yup. It's the water that warms you, which is why it's called a wetsuit. The more layers you add on, the more insulation there is, and as a result the warmer you are. Dry suits are sealed at the neck, arms, and legs not allowing any water to get in.

Wet or dry in Hawaii in May

Hmm. A 7mm or dry suit may seem over kill. Usually, you can get away with diving with a full 3mm or 5mm (if you're the type that gets cold). But it sounds like you're the warm type, so I would recommend diving with a 3 or 5 mm full length wet suit. :]

    Currents and diver experience level

I agree wholeheartedly. I've had OW divers who were quite good at dealing with currents and Advanced divers who were no better than a newly certified OW diver. So the key is to gauge how good a diver is beforehand by doing a check dive or taking the diver to a dive site where you can gauge how...

Activities in Utila for Non-Diver and after Dives

Hi there, Utila is a divers island so there is not a huge range of activities to do if you're not a diver. However, that said, here are a list of things your girlfriend could do: 1) Visit the iguana station - see the research that is being done at the center; if you're lucky you can see the...

    Travel Insurance

If you have renter's insurance, oftentimes that covers quite a lot including stolen gear, which is a lot more than what some traveler's insurance offer. Depending on your insurance, they could also offer some sort of coverage for delayed/cancelled trips. Check it out.

How do you secretly rat out a cheater?

That's a personal choice. Sounds like you're in a bit of an awkward situation. The problem is....if and when the girl finds out and she finds out that you knew about it, wouldn't that create some issues? I'm not saying you should tell her, but if it were me, and my friend was involved, I'd...

    a trip to Honduras

Also, do you want to do your diving through a dive centre or do a liveaboard? There is the Utila Agressor which offers some fantastic diving. Roatan is a bit more expensive and more "resorty" than Utila. I thought the diving was a tad better, especially because Roatan's shores are protected by...

    Diver Down question?!?

It's probably because PADI or any of the other dive training agencies don't have the rights to this book, and see no benefit in selling it as part of their class. But it's something that should be recommended. Good point!
