    Sidemount and Boat Operations

If the boat is really small and doesn't have room for me to get to the entry point with a tank, I'll having the tanks with a prussic loop on a line (it's ok to have both tanks on the same prussic loop.) For exit, if there is no crew to help, I'll attach the prussic loop to a hang line and then...

    Diver dies in Manatee Springs

IMO, treating the cave diving rules in the singular, or in isolation of other rules, is where the problem resides. In this case this would be a simple traverse/circuit. But it's also a siphon. And it's also a restriction. Applying one rule in isolation of the others will (and in this case...

Georgia diver collapses dead - Juno Beach, Florida

I had an employee driving on a business trip. He pulled over and stopped. And then died of a heart attack. "Widow maker" so it really wasn't going to be survivable. But he knew something was going on sufficiently to pull over safely and put the truck in "park." Something similar could have...

Nuclear plant fatality - Marseilles, Illinois

I agree and I can't think of any cause that could be attributed to only the diver. The dive supervisor and staff oversight have roles that should prevent any action by the diver that would cause the event. Protocols are supposed to exist to prevent working on the wrong piece of equipment or...

Nuclear plant fatality - Marseilles, Illinois

I'm terribly sorry for your loss. The time taken to call 911 shouldn't necessarily be considered delay in getting a rescue or treatment. My experience is that nuclear sites typically have a first responder team on site. They were likely the first to be called and made the determination to call...

    Mystery - Forward propulsion

Two stages, one left, one right ... gas ID wouldn't be an issue backmount mains or sidemount mains. Just need to ensure the neck labels are properly positioned.

Dive boat configurations pluses and minuses

Newton, Newton, Newton. Best dive boats of the size you're interested that I've ever seen. 42 ft twin screw turbo diesel. Capacity is a bit bigger than you're looking for but I wouldn't put 30 divers on one anyway ... way too crowded.

    Sidemount or BP/W?!

Sidemount. No problem on boats. Fine for shore dives. Single tank or double tank. One set of equipment on dive travel for recreational or technical. Only reason I use backmount, single tank, these days is when I'm teaching OW because that's what the students use.

    Mystery - Forward propulsion

@Ghattas - you mentioned two stages - if you're stages are slung like the video just a few posts back, that also contributes drag. Stages slung similar to sidemount with the tanks streamlined to your body will reduce the drag. But others have offered solutions that will likely offer larger...

Mexico vs Florida (better training caves)

I did Intro in FL and Cave 2 in Mx. I'm glad I went that route. The FL trip wasn't some big vacation so if I didn't cut it in cave diving or didn't like it, there was less sunk cost. It was a lot earlier in my whole diving career, too. Cave 2 in Mx was definitely beneficial. I got to see a...

    Devils Den Info?

Thanks! That helps and I can tie similar wreck dives (e.g. Kittiwake) into the discussion about the overhead environment and what to look out for in doing an accurate risk assessment.

    Devils Den Info?

A previous student of mine (various SSI specialties, cavern not included) posted about some diving he did in a "cave" at Devil's Den recently. The pics clearly show single Al80, no redundancy. But I've never been to Devil's Den so can't say for sure if he was in a cave zone or cavern zone or...

Fatality in the Vandenberg Wreck, Key West Florida

I think determining if this diver's decision making was adversely impacted by narcosis or not would be influenced by his previous decision making. I've been narced and I've found my decision making is slowed, not completely out of whack. (And, yes, I understand effects of narcosis are not the...

Fatality in the Vandenberg Wreck, Key West Florida

I don't get the "narc" theory. Based on the report it I inferred it was a bit into the dive (unless the buddy had to come right back up.) So going further into the wreck on the tail end of a dive ain't necessarily a good recipe ... even a cleared out wreck. I suppose we'll find out more when the...

Need advice on SM BCD for warm water diving

I did my SM training in a Subgravity Diamond system. I liked it a lot. But I ended up with a Hollis Katana because I got a deal on a package. I like it, too, with some minor modifications. Both work well with Al tanks though the Katana is single bladder only (and I think the Diamond is the same...

    How common is this?

None of my tech instructors anchored on the bottom either via knees or fins. My AN/DP instructor allowed the valve drill about 5 ft off the bottom / 2 ft off a small coral head which provided me a visual reference which was nice. But he never touched the bottom. And we were beyond the golf...

Medical release, how long are they good for?

I accept waivers for training within a year of the do signing them. Or if there has been a subsequent injury or change in medical status. My wife and I always carry a current medical waiver. But they are really only needed if seeking training (or as required for a dive pro by the agency.)

    Lake Travis fatality - Texas

I've seen similar sentiments in the past on this forum. For me the details could influence different or additional thoughts on accident prevention. But for the most part, the specific details that we will probably never know don't have to be present to have a good discussion on specifics of...

    Canary Islands

I don't know the area but a friend who is a tech instructor moved to Lanzarote in the last couple years. He works at Rubicon Diving Lanzarote (rubicondiving.com). If he thinks its worth moving there then I wouldn't question going there.
