    My AN/DP/Helitrox course

Rectangular? Kidding. Phone was totally fine. I actually forgot about it during the latter portion of the dive. I was reminded of it being in my pocket because it started ringing while we were on the dock.

    My AN/DP/Helitrox course

I was two hours into a 4.5 hour dive when I realized my phone was in my pocket.

A full sized lightsaber? That's irresponsible! It's a tangle hazard!

    Halcyon Carbon Plate

I think the consensus is clear, and I'm in agreement: You'll need an extra 1lb of lead with the carbon plate. One thing to warn you of: Carbon Fiber and Salt Water are VERY bad together. @tbone1004 can explain it better than I can, as he works in composite fibers professionally, including as a...

    Is my air consumption...bad-ish?

No, 0.50cuft/min is a pretty good SAC rate. It's nothing earth-shattering, but it's good. I'd say that most cave/tech divers I know are above that.

    Yamaha scooter advice

Isn't the 500Li appx $1500? If so, the DiveX Blacktip seems to be a MUCH better choice.

Peacock Springs - Upper Orange Grove Cave

Only thing to be aware of is the entrance isn't the easiest thing to find. From the platform where you gear up, it's "out and to the left" and not entirely difficult to kinda find. What a lot of people do, though, is overshoot it and end up at >80ft and heading towards Lower Orange Grove. If...

Sudafed / Pseudoephedrine & Diving (on air)

If I'm recalling correctly, the negative stigma some people have with Sudafed+Scuba was from a single oxtox study where two of the divers that toxed were on Sudafed, and the researchers noted it as an "unstudied variable" but made no recommendations or suggestions to stop diving with Sudafed...

    Homebuilding a Scooter

So, the usual reason for electric motors to "bog down" and not spin fast enough is that high power draws (relative to the C-rating of the battery pack) cause big voltage drops that put the battery outside of the "nominal" operating window. Something as insanely huge as a 2400Wh lithium pack...

    Salt - impact on weights?

I certainly could've been more clear, but yes. I meant you need to add 3.5% of the total weight of the "diver system" (tank, bc, diver, lead, etc). Your "system" will displace the same amount of water, so the "system" needs 3.5% more weight to still be neutral. So a 100kg "diver system" would...

    No knee skills for DM

She wasn't looking for a place to kneel, it was worse: It was muscle memory. Because of that muscle memory, she did what she was taught. Kneeling was part of how she cleared a mask....it was all she knew. It also wasn't just her....I've seen it with dozens of divers. Teaching people the...

    Salt - impact on weights?

The OP claims that this 1% or 3.5% difference is 4kg which can't be true unless the OP dives with 400kg of lead in normal sea or 115kg in fresh water. Doesn't make sense to me... Your explanation of "light" weights is also very possible.

    Salt - impact on weights?

The Red Sea has a specific gravity of 1.028 – 1.035. "Typical" ocean saltwater has a specific gravity of 1.025. So, yeah, you'll need ~3.5% of your total weight in lead in the Red Sea than in freshwater whereas you'll only need ~2.5% for typical ocean diving.

    No knee skills for DM

I disagree with this....and I'm not just sayin this on the "be neutral bandwagon." My wife's first OW dive after cert was in Roatan. We swam over a wall when she got water in her mask, so she immediately swung down to her knees to do the skill. She plummeted about 10ft before I caught her...

    Breathing technique

Part of the confusion is that everyone has small variations on what works best for them, everybody has heard half-truths from someone else, and there's not really any hard data to follow. I was given the 4-in, 8-out cycle when I first started diving. It's what I default back to when I feel my...

    Breathing technique

What I was taught as a rule of thumb to keep your breathing under control is to exhale for twice as long as you inhale. Count to four while you breathe in, pause for a second (don't hold your breath, just pause), then breathe out for 8 seconds, then pause. Total should be a ~15s cycle. It's a...

Who makes a GREAT custom drysuit

My wife and I have legitimately loved our O'Three Ri2-100 suits. The price makes them even better. Some friends dive and swear by both Otter and Seaskin. Reviews on the SFTech seem really good as well.

    Tanks and weighting

So you're underweighted by a couple of pounds if your drysuit has just enough gas to remove the squeeze (how you should be diving it). You want to be able to still stay down while comfortable in your drysuit with 500psi or less. Yeah, sounds like you're underweighted slightly. I'd bet 2-4lbs...

    Tanks and weighting

Firstly, are you correctly weighted now? What matters is that your wing is essentially empty at 15ft during your safety stop with an empty tank. Once that's true, you're correctly weighted. Now that you're correctly weighted with that tank, you can figure out what you need to do regarding...

    Cave 1 / Intro Expiration & Limits

The thing that really put it in perspective for me was a combination of a story by Andrew Ainslie and a story by one of my instructors. The gist of the lesson is: It doesn't matter how much gas you HAVE, it's how much gas you have immediate access to. Read the story linked above by Andrew...
