    Moving to Japan soon

Hi All, I will soon be moving to Mihara, nr. Hiroshima, and would be very keen to hear if anybody knows of any diving clubs / centres either in the city or nearby. I have done a pretty extensive webtrawl but no dice, of course this may be because I don't read Japanese... Thanks in...

    Do Underwater Cities Exist???

Ortoman has kindly given you a destination in Southern Turkey - Zuegma. Not necessarily Europe, but not that far away either. I also just did several dives in Yonaguni which, though amazing, is definitely not convenient from Europe or, indeed, from anywhere else - I live about 150km from...

    Tech Diver Stress & Rescue

Rescue was a good course, covered some good material, but not really in sufficient depth nor with sufficient repetition for real proficiency. Similarly, my divemaster training covered all the rescue material again, but my instructor required much more repetition and to demonstration quality no...

    Spiegel Grove Incident

I always check the tank strap as part of the standard buddy check under the "releases" section, it's got to be more important than the silly little chest strap thingy you get on some BC's these days, right?

    Predive accident

Like Ben said, keep one hand for the boat at all times and you won't go far wrong - especially when fully kitted up and shuffling toward the entry. I'm glad you're recovering.

Steel tank bands on aluminium tanks

Thanks Packhorse, That's what I figured; galvanic effect would cause sacrificial corrosion of the aluminium. Innertube it is then.

Steel tank bands on aluminium tanks

I am setting up my own set of twins and was wondering whether I need to prevent contact between the aluminium tanks and the stainless steel twinning bands and, if so, what the best way of achieving this might be? Any advice will be greatly appreciated. Cheers, TD

    Rip current on beach dive

Assuming you and your buddy might have been swept out and unable to regain the shore, did you have any procedure in place for alerting the authorities? When shore diving here we have a land based lookout to keep watch for our return whenever possible (my girlfriend is a non-diver and is...

TDI Advaced Nitrox and Deco Procedures

Congratulations Andy. I went to 55msw on air as part of my TDI extended range course and suffered mightily from the effects of narcosis, made worse by poor vis and current. I will definitely be looking into the benefits of Helium!

Insights from Rescue for BP/W users

Great thread... I am just back from PG and my TDI Extended Range (baby tech) course. The guys down there have thrown a lot of rescue stuff into the curriculum and, of course, everybody on the course and the instructors are all wearing BP/W, doubles and stages. My own solution is to...

    Scubapro mk25/s600 or Apeks XTX100??

I went for a pair of APEKS ATX100s for back gas, and when mounted on double 80s some of the hose bends can get a little bit tight back there but not especially so. I reckon these are so well made that they are probably the last regs I will ever own. The DST/ATX50s I have for my stages are...

    Power Inflator Blowout

That can be pretty scary so well done for staying calm and dealing with it. I had my LP inflator elbow dump valve fail a few months back, since then I have replaced it with a no-frills elbow (no valve) and since I stopped yanking on it to dump air there have been no problems.

    Do Underwater Cities Exist???

The project is called Aquarius, an underwater laboratory operated by NOAA off the Florida Keys. You may also like to have a look at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Underwater_habitat for details of other underwater habitats.

    Do Underwater Cities Exist???

Take a look at the Hydropolis project in Dubai for a modern submarine living space (it will eventually be a hotel). There is another submarine hotel somewhere in the States but I can't remember where exactly right now. You can also have a read about the Sealab experiment and similar...

    Get bent

Regrettably, I took a DCI hit in Thailand over the holidays. After 10 hours in a recompression chamber and was as good as new, though doctors orders are keeping me above sea level for a minimum of six weeks. Far from being a badge of honour, getting bent was a humbling (and a little...
