LA county diving and training methods

Thanks Sam. I was thinking of H.A. Fleuss' rebreather in 1878. I have either forgotten or wasn't aware of the 'Aerophore.'

LA county diving and training methods

I believe Nick is still teach the "History of Diving" portion of ADP. He brings a lot of interesting old equipment. The high point of last years class was an early rebreather. (Many divers don't realize that rebreathers preceded open circuit SCUBA).

LA county diving and training methods

I've always wanted to do a 'James Bond' and do a dive wearing my formal dinner jacket under my drysuit, so I can walk out onto the beach and strip the drysuit off and be ready for action. ;)

LA county diving and training methods

SoCal beach diving means you are entering the water off of both sand and rocks, and any combination thereof. I've recently had my most difficult exit ever at Malaga cove, where the rocks are bowling ball size or slightly larger, covered in slick alge. I started hitting the rocks in about 4...

    Underwater Vids From Casino Point

I've never done the bag o' peas because I agree with Empty V about not messing with the natural ecology of the area. I know a certain instructor who took a bag of peas to give his students a fun experience, and got more than he bargained for. There was a Black Sea Bass nearby which became...

Surface Freak Out (kind of long-winded)

I once had a surface panic when I started going to the gym regularly. My shoulders and chest changed, but my custom wetsuit did not. I had that whole shortness of breath thing beforehand too, but it was subtle enough that I didn't realize the problem. Diving started to not be fun anymore...

How to: Install Dry Gloves in 5 minutes! (Picture Heavy)

I ordered my Viking ring set from Bob3. Since this was my first set, and I wasn't 100 sure of the glove fit and such, I just ordered one of each pair of gloves - the 660 and the 495s. They were cheap enough. Looking forward to trying them. Ray

Can You Reach Your Tank Valve

I will not get in the water without being able to reach my valves. In fact, it is the last thing I do before entering the water. If I'm at the gate of a boat about to enter the water and I feel the hand of the DM on my valve, things immediately come to a stop and I make sure my hand is the...

Seduced by SoCal - Trip report is up!

SB, Depends on the targeted site. I've been on boats that have arrived at nearby sites in 20-30 minutes, and others that took 8 hours to get out to San Miguel Island. About 1.5-2 hours is the average. The longer trips are rarer.

Seduced by SoCal - Trip report is up!

Hurray! I'm mentioned! :D Still reading...just wanted to be the first post... ;) EDIT: Now that I've read it, I have to say that I enjoyed the descriptions of the dives I wasn't on, and I laughed while reliving the ones I experienced. I had a great time diving with all you guys. And hats...

The Most Difficult Skill to Master

Heh, I saw the title of this thread and I thought it was asking for input on what we thought was the hardest skill to master. I clicked on the thread already planning to add "Doing Nothing" to the list. And there it was, in the OP. Good call Rick. :) I love hovering motionless (as well as I...

    how many tanks

I owned only one for a long time...8 years or so. Then I bought another, and another. I now have 8. Mostly steels. Not really using my AL80s any more, but haven't sold them yet.

    ?? info about PST Steel HP3500 80's & 100's from 1998

Let me know and I'll take them. :D My first tank was a PST HP100, and its still going strong. I regretted for a while not getting a second one so I could double them up, but nowadays it might be hard to find a properly threaded manifold set. At those pressures I wouldn't convert them to yoke.

How to: Install Dry Gloves in 5 minutes! (Picture Heavy)

I notice on the (very) few sites I can find where they are being sold, that they list the 'cuff rings' and the 'bayonet glove rings'. I'm assuming that I have to buy these two separate packages? The 'glove rings' package doesn't include the cuff rings as well? Is there an 'includes...

Excellent post!! I was just going to ask about the drysuit side. As someone who is considering either DC or Viking systems, this is very useful. Thanks!

Back Inflation Divers Can you do this?

Just as you can trim out your weights for head vs. feet, so can you trim out your weight for front vs back. I had a friend who was having serious problems with his BP/W in the water. Every time he would twist sideways at all in the water while horizontal, the weight of the tank would flip him...
