Fire on dive boat Conception in CA

Wait a minute, Louisville Diver: Are you saying that the "escape hatch" didn't lead outside, but instead led to another cabinet from which they then had do escape? How do you know this? (I think you said you had been on a sister ship, but I'm not sure.) If this is true, that's madness!

Fire on dive boat Conception in CA

Thank you for the video Somesbar. It truly gives you a feel for what the poor people would have had to go through to get out through the galley and salon.

12 boys lost in flooded Thai cave

Thanks! This is an excellent video that explains the challenges much better than the general media does.

Filmmaker Rob Stewart dies off Alligator Reef

I'm a "simple recreational diver", but this post reminds me of something I learned here from Dandy Don many years ago: I never take my reg out until I am back on the bench on the boat. Yeah, people look at me funny and no, it's not very "cool". But it's the safest way to get back to the boat.

Any ideas on flooding insurance for a non-US resident/non-homeowner???

Hi Christine, I'm very curious to hear what you organised. I'm an American living in France and previously insured my gear and cameras with DEPP. Now they're gone and I'm looking at options. DAN Europe doesn't seem to have any equipment insurance and I'm not finding another provider. Thanks!

    Equipment Insurance

Tigerman, could you tell me who you went with for your equipment insurance? I'm resident in France, so the DAN USA site says they won't insure me. And as you correctly wrote, DAN Europe does not insure cameras (actually, I can't even find where they insure equipment. I used to be with DEPP, out...

Deaths at Eagles Nest - Homosassa FL

I suppose most of you have seen (on the news or in person) the wooden warning sign near the entrance to the Eagle's Nest that says it's a dangerous site and only experienced cave divers should go in. I'm wondering if they shouldn't modify the sign to list the names (and ages) of all those who...

if you find a camera, do you give it back?

This is just tacky! If he didn't know who the owner was, well that's one thing. But here, he does. This reminds me of some of the stories over the years on Scubaboard where someone has found a camera and posted pictures on here, trying to find the owner. There was one case where the owner was...

Second Caymans fatality in a week

"Most of the other victims were visitors from the US who were over 50 years of age." I'd be curious to know how many years these folks had been diving (or really, how many dives they had) before this happened. It's one thing to dive as a senior citizen when you've been doing it for years and...

Brit Hit by Prop in Egypt

Hi Don, I saw this on the Daily Mail this morning. Several sharp readers quickly corrected the "oxygen tank" mistake. But one of them asked how supposedly experienced divers could have surfaced into the propellers of a boat. As someone who's dived in Egypt, I have to say it's easy. There's...

Scuba Shack's Boat Get Wet Sinks in Key Largo

My first idea was that maybe the Captain thought there wasn't an extradition treaty between the Bahamas and the USA and was making a run for it. He wouldn't be the first to do that.

Scuba Shack's Boat Get Wet Sinks in Key Largo

Thanks to Don, I'm getting a CO analyzer before my next trip. But I have to admit I have chuckled a little at his posts in other forums where he talks about getting back in the boat, going to the bench, off-loading his gear & then donning a snorkel vest. "How silly", I thought, "We all know how...

    Skin Bends - Lessons learned

First, thanks to Ken (and Audrey) for sharing this with us. And thanks to the Duke dive docs for sharing the photos. I'd never seen that before, but now I know... TS&M: thanks for that reminder about not shooting up from the bar to the boat. I used to be one of those divers who figured since...

    Wilmington Incident - 16 Oct

Nice post! And yep, here's a viewer waving her hand. I've lost count of how many times the Accidents & Incidents forum has helped me (or my buddy) avoid a bad situation & in at least one case, a situation that could have been fatal. I too, am very grateful for this forum.

    Diver missing on Oriskany 10/22/11

I'm relieved for the family that Mr. Duffin's body has been found. But I must add something. Earlier in this thread, a request was made to stop posting and speculating. And I posted in reply that had this happened to me, I would want people to talk about it and even speculate - because...

    Diver missing on Oriskany 10/22/11

WhiteWaterMike, thanks for your post. It was excellent. And I can only imagine the pain you felt when writing it. I am so sorry you have not been able to find your friend. And I am so very sorry for his poor wife, who was out there when this happened. This man was clearly a passionate...

    Diver missing on Oriskany 10/22/11

With all due respect, I'm making a note right now to tell my family that if I get taken in a diving accident, people on this board should feel free to speculate away about what went wrong. I say this because it would be through this board that hopefully somebody could learn something from my...

AN AMERICAN man was killed in a shark attack while diving off Rottnest Island, Perth

So it looks like this man was solo diving and spearfishing at a location not far from where a swimmer was presumably killed just days earlier by a shark? I'd call this Darwin's theory of SCUBA diving coming into play. :shakehead:
