Aluminum 80' as a Pony Cylinder?

I am considering slinging an aluminum 40', using a stage strap kit as a pony cylinder? Is this unwise in any way (size, weight, etc?). Since the prices for an 80' and 40' are about the same, why not carry more gas for the same priced cylinder?

Near Incident - Dive with a Divemaster, Instructor and Family of 4

There was no mentioned turnaround pressure during the briefing. :banghead: What was really shocking to me was that the dive professionals who were involved were very experienced, yet this near-miss due to lack of communication still occurred. Thank you :D What shocked me was...

    Lesson Learned - Self-Sufficiency, Unsafe/Incompetent Divers and the "Insta-Buddy"

The "trust-me" dive. There is a story in the book "Diver Down". From what I know, it appears that the group members carried no more gas than aluminum 80s. I don't think they were prepared nor equipped to for decompression. I don't know exactly how he arrived at that number, but yes, it...

    Lesson Learned - Self-Sufficiency, Unsafe/Incompetent Divers and the "Insta-Buddy"

Having and using a snorkel on this dive would have been very helpful. Indeed, during the swim out, I was only slightly below the surface, 15 (4-5 meters) feet, but could have used a snorkel at the surface instead. I'll be revising my habit of not carrying a snorkel. Thank you for the...

    Lesson Learned - Self-Sufficiency, Unsafe/Incompetent Divers and the "Insta-Buddy"

Thank you for your replies :) :) Definitely a lot for me to think about, and a lot more to do before even attempting the next dive. I heard somewhere that there is a certain dangerous point in experience, where a diver has enough skill and mental coolness to avoid getting into most troubles...

This is my first posting here in this part of the forum, I hope to share what I learned from this event and know your perspectives! ;) Much of the incident can be attributed to my personal mistakes :shakehead: and some, to the errors of the group. Wanting to contribute to environmental...

Underwater Photo and Video Gear for Tech Divers?

Hi! Are there photography and videography gear (housings, cameras) designed for depths beyond recreational divers' limits? Or, are tech divers somewhat limited in this area? :( Just a curiosity of mine! Thanks!

Pure Oxygen in Aluminum 80 - How to ?

Hello ScubaBoard, I own an aluminum 80 (currently configured for SCUBA, with a SCUBA valve) that I hope to use as part of an emergency oxygen supply, by having it hold pure oxygen. Is this possible / advisable? Would this cylinder need to be cleaned, and the valve replaced with...

Buy a Dive Watch - Yes or No?

Hello ScubaBoard, Do you personally dive wearing a dive watch? I own two air/nitrox dive computers so I do have a redundancy from that perspective. I am currently thinking of buying a dive watch (a particular model I am really liking is in the $200-$300 range), but am wondering if it's...

Previous Smoking and Lung Exposure History and Current Fitness to Dive?

Hello ScubaBoard! I have a question regarding medical fitness for diving, your perspective is very much appreciated: I have smoked tobacco cigarettes from age 16 to 24, with a 2 year break during the period and a few periods lasting a few weeks to months without any smoking :(. On average...

Emergency Life-Support Equipment - Oxygen and AED? - Who Carries on Dive Trips?

Wow, this thread has become a very informative discussion. I assume the dive scene where I am is somewhat disconnected to the ScubaBoard dive scene. Not once have I heard nor seen emergency oxygen anywhere near a dive. Nor is it available easily on the market.

Proton Metal Second Stage vs. Abyss Second Stage - Which Performs Better for Tech?

There's a current plan underway for expanding my dive training into tech diving :cool2:, it's clear that I will likely be purchasing additional regulators in addition to what I own (for recreational diving). I own a Mares proton metal second stage, paired with a V16 first stage, which I...

Curious Question - Why Buy New Regulators?

Hello ScubaBoard, I have a question out of curiosity: why would anyone ever buy NEW regulators, since the purchase doesn't seem to make as much financial sense as buying (depending on condition) used regulators. Since, if a qualified technician can restore and service the regulator, it should...
