More Specific ID of a Sea Cucumber Requested

There are many cucumbers out there that I would not attempt to identify. But this is one of the common ones, regularly seen on the kind of reefs scuba divers like in the South Pacific. And I haven't heard it to be part of a complex of look-alike species. But as an amateur, working from a...

Olympus C5050/PT-015 with Inon wide angle

Actually, it's a requirement that water be between the port and the add-on lens. The optics are designed with that in mind, and will not work right with air there. -Mark

How long will my gear survive underwater?

One thing we can all learn from this: put your name and address inside your housing. If you lose and it is found by someone who is honest, you could get it back. Without identification, there is no hope. -Mark

    C-5050 CF card - 2GB limit?

Yes, I'm certain I can put more than 1 Gig of pictures on my 2 Gig card. It starts off with room for 275 of them in raw mode. I just took 164 identical pictures out my window, which left room for 110 more. That used about 1.2 Gig. -Mark

some corals and a sea cucumber

The second picture with the polyps closeup is a leather coral, Sarcophyton sp. The cucumber picture isn't very clear, but it's most likely Bohadschia argus, a common species that always shows a circular mottled pattern. The bottom picture is most likely a Porites sp., but I couldn't tell which...

    Need ID help

It's actually a stoney coral, Euphyllia ancora. It's known in the aquarium hobby as hammer coral. The skeleton is low and thick, and the tentacles are several inches long, forming a halo around it. -Mark

    Lights and sea creatures

Personally, I do night dives with a relatively dim light. I usually just use the focus assist light on my camera rig. It upsets fish less, allowing me to see more. I do carry a high power light clipped to my BC in case of emergency. But the only time I've actually used that was to pass it...

    Unknown octocoral

Here's a picture I took last week in the Sea of Cortez, of a mystery creature most likely related to sea fans or gorgonians. This was shot at about 30 feet, though I saw these at a variety of depths. This one is about a foot across. The branches are firm, but slightly flexible. What...

I have yet to get my hands on a D6 to find out how different they are. I'm fairly certain that the D9 cable contains electronics, most likely a specialized USB-Serial converter. -Mark

    Theme 16-30 Sept 06: Sharks!

OK, two unusual shark pictures. In Saba last year, we saw a lot of juvenile nurse sharks. One of this pair has gotten herself into a tonic immobility state. When I saw it, I was afraid that she was in trouble. But a professional aquarist along on the trip explained after the dive that most...
