This is crap. I emailed friends who run Phuket Scuba Club on Kata beach to check they were OK. Luckily they all survived without mishap but they've confirmed that nearly everything is up and running OK. The diveboats and liveaboards were all operating within a matter of days so don't...
Krabi is OK but the diving is no great shakes. Some of the decent off shore dive sites are much closer to Phuket than Krabi. Krabi is however nearer Hin Deng/Hin Muang. Phi Phi has some good dive sites and the vis is much better. As Ilandeemst says the best diving is in the Similans/Mergui area.
Just come back from 3 weeks in Koh Samui of which 3 days were spent diving with Samui International Divers off Koh Tao.
First a word about SIDs - they were the only dive shop that bothered to reply to my email enquiry back in March about diving in the area. I found them very helpful...
I'm well aware that the diving off Koh Samui is meant to be OK but no great shakes, but can anyone give me some recomendations for Dive Operators and Dive Sites. We're thinking of heading out there late May/early June.
thanks in advance

May I suggest you all calm down! I keep getting these messages at work reporting this post or that post. By all means let's have a frank exchange of views but let's also keep the personal heat out of our comments.
regards to you all
I've never heard of them. Are they listed in the PADI directory?
If you want a personal recommendation try:

who are also on Kata beach.

I'll just endorse Steven's comments on Kata Beach. Very nice beach. Reasonable diving off the beach. Good restaurants and bars. 10 minutes from Chalong. Great place to stay if you want to holiday on Phuket.

You can get lots of info on places to stay and most of them can be booked over the internet.
If you want to stay on Phuket then note that the beaches are on the West of the island. Can personally recommend Kata beach. Also has the advantage that if you want to take the...

I was there on holiday 3 years ago - it's where I did my OW course. There are loads of hotels ranging from the very inexpensive to the very expensive. You should have no problem finding something to suit your budget.

There are a number of dive ops on Ao...
1. watch out for the monkeys. These are little sharp teethed monsters who hand around many of the public beaches and wii try and grab cameras, bags, food etc. Stay away from them - they are a bloody nuisance and if you get bitten you will need to see a doctor asap if not go to Hospital.

I just checked the PADI website and only saw two Dive Operators listed. We were on Langkawi for 2 weeks about 3 tears ago and there wasn't much diving on the island. However, the main island is surrounded by hundreads of others and I expect that there is some reasonable diving...
In any situation where you don't have external reference points you can become disoriented. This is where a bubble comes in handy! It's the same whether you are flying or diving except that it is much more common when flying - at least in this country when the weather is frequently bad. If you...
