Just an FYI for anyone who used to dive with me and might be wondering where I disappeared to, and for anyone in the Burlington, VT area who might want to hook up for the occasional dive: I'm moving to Vermont in June.

After hundreds of shore dives, and half a dozen flags, I've settled on using one of these ratcheting reels. In my experience, nothing has worked better, been easier to manage, or made flag towing less obtrusive:

I'm looking to do some shore dives in Cohasset during the two weeks I'm off in early July, and I have a beach sticker that will grant easy access to otherwise hard to dive spots.. Let me know if you're interested.

I'm climbing back down the ladder. I have trimix certification, but I'm mostly interested in shore diving for food and photography, and teaching my young kids to swim and snorkle.

I broke down my doubles when my daughter was born so I wouldn't be tempted to push my limits, but I was diving doubled Asahi/Genesis HP100s, and found them to be pretty nice with a drysuit albeit a bit heavy on land. I always coveted doubled LP104s though.

I'd guess it was a winter skate. Sounds like a nice swim!

The sign at the beach ramp says no, if I recall correctly, but I've certainly made several dives there that ended after sunset.

Of course, if you want to go snorkeling (this is a thread about snorkeling), Stellwagen is likely to be too deep for you, and Salem harbor has significant boat traffic hazards.

Spectrum's right... Eastport is not a dive I'd recommend to anyone who has never done any cold water diving before. It's not much like the Caribbean at all... low visibility, high currents, cold water (All of my diving in Maine has been below 45F), and no supervision from a divemaster. I think...

I was wading at low tide with my 2 year old daughter yesterday at Sandy Beach in Cohasset, and was surprised... no, shocked, to see a bright green tropical fish (that I didn't immediately recognize) swimming frantically around us. I've seen plenty in Rhode Island, but this must have been one...

That's really strange, and not the sort of thing I've ever seen happen as a result of contact with water containing pool chemicals or the like. Were you, by any chance, wearing some sort of lotion, creme, or oil? Any chance the seals were exposed to solvents in the past? It could be they were...

As long as you don't spear them, using a pole spear as a tickle stick is fine.
