Emperor Echo damaged; guests and crew safe.

Was on her in June--good boat and crew. Just got a short What's App video and the only thing on the surface is a small section of decking and what looks like the bridge.

    Split fin hate?

Been diving my Tusa X Pert full foot fins since 2005. Get some funny looks sometimes but I love them. So light and I've gotten to the point where I can kick with my ankles twisted a bit and scull the individual splits which I find useful for photography. Generally use them frog kicking and I...

    Nikon One J3

Took these in July in St. Croix with a Nikon One J4 in a WP-N3 (got the housing on E-Bay for $50) and a INON D2000 Strobe I had lying around. Used a 18.5mm lens for the camera and wet macro lens for the close-up stuff:

    Question Air Hog

This isn't some military op. We're not on a mission and have to swim "continuously and effectively." We're just doing some recreational diving! I'd rather go at a relaxed pace and not put stress on an inexperienced buddy about having to keep up with me. And I'd rather have him/her in my...

    Question Air Hog

Yeah, I prefer to be a bit lower and behind especially if my buddy is less experienced than me. Helps balance out air consumption and generally keeps the dive moving slower.

    Question Air Hog

When did I say behind them? Being a bit higher in the water column is absolutely fine.

    Question Air Hog

First answer, absolutely not. My longer answer would be to really look at why you're breathing do much. Get someone to video you, for example, and really see how you move in the water. Get dialed in on trim. Learn to frog kick. Another thing you can do is always dive a little bit above...

Question Red Sea RE Aggressor trips to Sudan?

I just got done booking a Red Sea trip and used a very interesting business class fare deal on Star Alliance. You can fly into Hurghada or Marsa Alam round trip in business from the US for $2,600 to $3,000 but the trick (and the benefit) is that you have to add a stopover in Europe in at least...

    Diving myths taught for safety?

I'm not sure if this is still taught, but surely a once-prevalent myth was "deepest dive of the day should be the first dive of the day." I think the most dangeous "myth" is that there are non-solo dives.

    Flower Garden trips CANCELLED

The oil spill is simply about money. What they did would be no different if they called up and said James Cameron offered them a megabuck to dive FG for a week and thus they were kicking you off the boat on your next trip.

    Flower Garden trips CANCELLED

Why? This isn't about BP and it isn't about the oil spill. The Fling's participation in the clean up isn't going to change outcomes in the slightest. It comes down to this: they could make $X with divers and they could make $X + $Y as a floating dorm. To make $X + $Y they unilaterally...

The Fling cancels all(most) June trips to Flower Gardens

Very, very poor showing on the part of the owners of the Fling. Abrogating a contract to make more money elsewhere is really bad form and will cast a pall over their business for a long time. Perhaps the trips have been so close to the edge in profitability they are just going to cash out due...

Is there a trick to learn to sink with less weight?

One little trick I do, particularly with a dry/new wetsuit, is to perform a single, strong scissors kick at the surface while exhaling (raising up out of the water a foot or so). It can give you a little extra downward momentum.

    Mondini Dysplasia and Diving

Thanks for taking the time to write such a thoughtful response, one which I'll keep around since it summarizes the range of issues he would face. Its also pretty much what I expected. Our default position now is to make sure, at a minimum, he is in a position to have completed his education...

    Mondini Dysplasia and Diving

We've recently learned (confirmed by MRI) that my 2-year old son has Mondini Dyspasia in his right ear (a partially formed cochlea) and appears to have little to no hearing capability in that ear. His left ear appears to have a normal inner ear structure and displays a normal range of hearing...

    Piston or Diaphragm regulator?

Warm water diver, I like my piston reg (Oceanic). Breathes well and I appreciate the feedback of a little more difficult breathing as you're getting near the end of the tank.

    Solo diving

Did some solo muck diving in PNG as my first experience...surface was just 5 to 7 meters above so wasn't too concerned about it. Had a big dive trip to Bonaire thrown into a tizzy when my wife/buddy had to go and get pregnant! I knew the dive site off our our hotel very well (Small Wall)...
