How to illuminate wrist computer during night dive?

Even if you don't blind your buddies, a light on your mask strap will tend to attract a swarm of bitty critters in front of your mask, and the glare will affect your vis (ask a photog why they have the strobes mounted on arms, away from the camera lens).

Divers wanted to find golf balls $100,000 year

And don't forget about all the fertilizer, weedkiller, and pesticides that would give a whole new meaning to 'water hazard.' According to OSHA, don't you have to have surface support, including a suited rescue diver at the ready, for commercial diving? So you could cut that $100K about five ways?

    Really Bad Regulators

I just had my 15-year-old ScubaPro regs (which I bought off of eBay) in for service, and when the tech was bench-testing them he said, "Wow. These breath better than my new Apex regs!" To the OP, I would just add one comment. Several posters have suggested you get regs that can be serviced...

Seeking the elusive SDI Solo Diver course...

ClayJar, I don't tknow of you tried AquaSports. I just called them, and they do conduct the class on an 'on demand' basis. I asked if there was a minimum number of students that need to be signed up, and he said that they 'prefer to have two.' Just trying to help... Oh, and is it ironic...

    Accurate compass??

Yes, as a matter of fact, you can. It fits on a modified Kirby Morgan Supermask. Or so I've heard. ;) For more info and pix on the TRD stuff, click here and scroll down to page 7, but keep in mind it is a press release, and should be weighed accordingly.

Dutch scuba diver became the surprise catch of the day

Hooked him in the lip, even! Somebody photoshop a kid on the pier with a diver hanging on a big fish scale!

    Accurate compass??

Of course you can, if you are the US Military :) One minor note, the HMU hasn't replaced the tac board for simple navigation. Here's an interesting article, and fairly accurate. However, calling the HMU "laptop sized" is a bit of a stretch...

Seeking the elusive SDI Solo Diver course...

You might try Austin AquaSports http://austinaquasports.com/ Mapquest lists it as 7 hours. I get my regs serviced there, but haven’t taken any classes from them. They are probably the most technical shop in town.

Portable DIY Reg Shelf in RubberMaid Tote

Or a single oblong hole in the middle that you can put all your fingers in. That way you could lift it out with one hand. Wouldn't work if you want to store small parts on the shelf, though...

    OOA at 90 FFW...well kinda!!!

Way to handle the situation! An additional step you might consider adding is to breath off of your reg a couple of times, while watching the SPG, as part of your pre-dive. That's something I learned here on the board and have incorporated into my routine.

    Used Gear from e bay

I eBayed my original reg set and BC and bought (on eBay) the BC, first stage, and primary second that I now use. My safe second and back-up depth gauge are from craigslist. My LDS services regs for $20/stage plus parts, no matter where you get 'em from. I bought an O2 booster from eBay for...

    Buying gear from Craigslist?

I haven't been around as long as you guys, but thought I'd chip in... Just to nitpick... I have the July '53 Popular Science article, "How to Build and Use a Diving Lung." It specifies surplus CO2 or O2 Cylinders, not fire extinguishers. It also specifies a surplus O2 demand regulator...

    Ok Honestly?!?!?!

My only suggestion would be to not mix-and-match on the regs (Mares and Tusa) so you can get 'em serviced at the same time, and at the same shop. You didn't mention where or for how long you are going to be in Africa. Have you checked into whether or not you are going to be able to get these...
