PVC !!! I did the same thing. See if I can get some pics.
Got a piece of expanded aluminum sheeting to make a gear platform and zip tied it to the PVC tubing..

Hardly ever use my hose to deflate my bladder.
I use the dump at the bottom of the bag. I'm usually slightly head down anyway, horizontally that is.

Just make sure to use the AVERAGE dive depth when computing one's SAC rate.
Keep in mind that some computers quit calculating after one ascends above 13-15 feet or so.
Keeping one's reg in one's mouth while waiting to do a ladder ride adds significantly to the amount of gas consumed.
Find the best reference point you can. I dark, open water maintaining a precise depth can be quite problematic without some type of fixed depth reference. Often times just the small floating objects about you can be used. For the most part they are maintaining a constant depth, unless, that...
As mentioned, it depends upon the mental maturity of your child.
I've worked with youth for many years, especially in scouting, and the differences among children of the same age to focus and retain are profound.

Isn't it the diver who is responsible for the planning and...
What everyone has already said . . .
But, I would recommend that you take the additional "specialties" that improve the basic aspects of your diving and your diving safety.

There's a dive shop here in the Atlanta area that is geared only on making money.
I'm certified to O2 clean and visually inspect tanks.
I had my tanks hydroed. Brought them home, tumbled them, rinsed them, treated and rinsed and did an O2 cleaning on the valves.
Put my inspection sticker on...
Have at it !!!
By doing so you will learn, first hand, the characteristics of some of your gear, especially the buoyancy aspect of your wetsuit.
As mentioned above, add a snorkel to the list.
