Land-based Tiger Beach with Stuart Cove

I've made trips to Tiger Beach, Bahamas, in the past, but this was my first time from a land-based boat as opposed to a liveaboard. Stuart Cove is running trips from West End, Grand Bahama. The trip is about an hour's run each way. Here are a few shots from the past 3 days:

    Lionfish in Bonaire

When I was in Bonaire 2 years ago, the lionfish were just a rumor. Now they're all over the place. The Bahamas have been infested with them for a while, and now it looks like there's a new top predator on the reefs throughout the entire Caribbean. Here are a few shots from a few weeks ago. -Clay

    Coleman shrimp

I don't know if I should be honored that they named a shrimp after me, or if I should be miffed by the reference to my stature. Just kidding, of course, but a cool-looking beast. This is from a recent trip to Mindoro, Philippines

    Bonaire pipefish

Well, I finally got one! I've seen bits of them in the coral before, and I've seen them in the open briefly, but I've never gotten a shot. It has some technical problems (and is edited for my printer, so it may appear light on laptop monitors), but, dammit, it's a pipefish (harlequin) and I'm...

    Crystal River manatees

Vistited Crystal River/Homosassa last week after skipping last year. There are reportedly more manatees in the area than any time in the past 10 years. I didn't count, but I can definitely report more manatees than you can shake a stick at. If you've ever wanted to photograph manatees, now's the...

    Holbox whale sharks

Hey, y'all. I'm just back from the island of Holbox (pronounced HOLE-bosh), which is just north of the Yucatan in the Gulf of Mexico. I've been hearing about the whale shark encounters there in mid-summer, and danged if the reports aren't true! We found them every day for 5 straight days...

    Jonathan Bird's Blue World

I'm not affiliated with Blue World in any way, but it's a cool site to see short, professional videos. Check out Jonathan Bird's Blue World and have a look. I had an opportunity to dive with Jonathan a few weeks ago as he was working on an episode about Bahama sharks. Here's a shot of cameraman...

    Underwater band

I originally posted this thread in the videography forum by mistake. It didn't get moved, so I'll start over. I hope my computer clumsiness doesn't break any rules. I was recently hired to photograph a musical band in a swimming pool for album art, and it was such a different kind of shoot that...

    Underwater band

I got a job recently to photograph a musical band underwater for album art. They were in a swimming pool with assorted instruments. Not my typical underwater photography gig. Here are a few shots: If you ever have to shoot in a pool, my advice is to do it early morning, late afternoon, or...

    Spinner shark?

We've been seeing these little (3-5') sharks in the Gulf of Mexico at the Flower Gardens Banks and around nearby oil rigs. The ones seen at the actual banks are almost always solitary; the ones around the rigs are organized in schools of 10 or so animals. Most sightings are early morning or late...

    Loggerhead eats oil rig

Oil rigs in the Gulf of Mexico are well known as fish habitat, but they also serve sponges to loggerhead turtles. This monster (over 200 lbs, I'm sure) was going over the pilings like corn on the cob: and seemed to be happy with the results: Clay

    Bonaire moray ID

Ok, fish experts. This moray was photographed at night on a Bonaire reef. The eel was smallish (a bit bigger than a goldentail) and shy. I've been calling it a chain despite the fact that it has very little yellow coloration. Could it be a juvenile? What do you think? Clay
