Phuket is central to most of Thailands best dive sites. Once everybody is certified, like Steven, I also highly recommend going on a Liveaboard cruise to The Similan and Surin islands.
The Kata area might suit you as there are local dive sites within minutes from the beach and it is closley...
Well said Lord Khram! Unfortunately teachers do not earn great salaries here. To the OP, if scuba diving here is one of your main priorities your chances of achieving your goals will be very limited unless you have an alternative source of income to help pay the bills.

The longtail boat and shore dives are ideal for those who dont want to go out the entire day on a daytrip. The beauty of these dive sites is that there are hardly any other divers around. Also these sites are not indicative of the best diving that Thailand has to offer but they certainly are...
Unfortunately in September it is also the low season in Koh Lanta. You will have more dive sites to opt for around Phi Phi and Phuket during this time of year.
November is the quieter month to come and because there are so many medium to lower priced liveaboard boats you may be able to take advantage of the last minute special offers. These last minute specials are usually offered about a week prior to departure.

In all honesty if you could try and postpone your trip but at least a further 2 weeks until early November when The Similans is officially re opened I am sure that you will have a better chance of enjoying a better Liveaboard cruise.
Relieved to hear that your daughter is ok....well done to you :) Otherwise we stopped the shore dives towards the end of April when the conditions changed....pity because we have had some amazing shore dives this high season.
Yup this has been truly unusual...I have never seen such strong winds a rainstorms over such a long period here. Granted it is the monsoon season now but this has been awful. Usually in between rain showers we experience hot humid days at this time of year.
