    Kauai dive op recommendation

Shane and I just did a two tank dive trip to Niihau (the forbidden Island) with Explore Kauai Scuba. Nick and Jessi run a top notch operation and their 27' R.I.B. is powered by two 150hp 4 stroke Yamahas that get the job done. Nick is an excellent skipper and was great at spotting surface action...

    Muck/macro/critter-diving for non-photographers

I'm sorry but I don't remember the power but the diameter was about 3". Nothing specific.. just a cheap magnifying glass from the dollar store and I popped the lens out of the frame. The first few times I made U/W magnifiers I used the more expensive rectangular reading magnifiers. I kept the...

    Muck/macro/critter-diving for non-photographers

Just get an inexpensive manifying glass and remove the handle. This doesn't need to be a precision instrument. Far more important will be your buoyancy control and 'any position' stability.. both of which will be challenged and improved by using a magnifier. :) When helping people with buoyancy...

    Muck/macro/critter-diving for non-photographers

The glass lens is retained because it is contained. It doesn't matter if the lens touches the face pieces in the middle. Under pressure that would probably happen anyway.

Google Plexiglas Brussels for a supplier. Measure thickness of your glass lens and get the same thickness of Plexiglas (6~7mm) I don't have a profile picture of the magnifier but just make your cover pieces 6~7mm larger radius than the lens. The spacer ring is not cut from a tube but from the...

    Muck/macro/critter-diving for non-photographers

U/W magnifier made with one glass lens and three pieces of clear 1/4" thick acrylic plexiglass bonded together with acrylic glue. Two circular pieces of plexiglass cut larger than lens. One ring of plexiglass cut to act as a spacer between them to encapsulate lens. Should be water tight if the...

U/W magnifier by Uncle Pug posted Mar 31, 2005 at 3:38 PM Cheap glass lens sandwiched between two layers of clear plastic. A circular ring of the same plastic acts as a spacer and provides for the air gap on both sides of the lens. Scratches on the plastic disappear underwater. because of the...

    Why do you dive?

I can still remember the first breath I took underwater... and thinking the same thing! It just so happened to be at a YMCA pool as well, only in the 1960s. I learned to swim in that pool before I was in kindergarten.. and had always wanted to scuba dive. It was amazing to breather underwater...

    TSandM -- Lynne Flaherty

It is so inconceivable that Lynne.. careful competent Lynne is gone. Like so many others I'm stunned at the loss.. but it is Peter that my heart goes out to right now. I can't imagine the depth of numbness, I can only hurt for him.. and pray for him. It would be wonderful to hear that Lynne had...

    Anchored Boat story 2

I've only been stranded by a live boat operator twice: once we were able to hitch a ride with a fishing boat several miles from the drop in and another time I was able to swim to a nearby island and wait for a ride. I figure as long as I have my drysuit (on) and my fins I'm golden here in Puget...

    Anchored Boat story 2

That cracking noise you heard was probably the cleat starting to say goodbye to the boat rather than the transom getting ready to depart so it is unlikely that the boat would have sunk. However having had a boat sink out from under me before I can agree that it is comforting to already be in...

    Lift off without the silt

Shooting UP It's possible but you need blue split fins to do it. If you only have black split fins you can spray paint them blue and then they will work just fine.
