CHUM is Heading to the Flower Gardens - June 2-4

CHUM is preparing for one of our annual trips to the Flower Gardens on the M/V Fling. This is a great Texas dive destination and the trip usually fills up with divers eager to dust off the gear and get some early summer diving in. To find out more visit the thread below June Fling - CHUM trip...

Ready for a June Fling? Visit the Flower Gardens with CHUM

CHUM will be visiting the Flower Gardens, via the M/V Fling, from June 12-14 and we'd love to have you join us. Here's the drill; we board the Fling on Friday night, dive Saturday (up to 5 dives), dive Sunday (up to 2 dives) morning and then head back to Freeport. We have a few spots...

    Puerto Vallarta thermoclines

I dove Majahuitas area on 4/14 and it was prob the best conditions I have seen in PV. The bay was very calm and surface temps near 79-80F. Viz was 50-60' which I have not had in the bay. Also experienced the thermoclines though it didn't get as cold for me - dropped to low 70s around 50-55'...

    Recent Reports From Utila?

Echoing laurenceh, the viz was relatively bad late this past week (19th and 20st) due to storms. Surge conditions on the top of the reef and minimal viz, but cleared out to around ~ 40ft along the wall. A layer of colder water was on the surface which made some safety stops chilly and when the...

    Utila Dive Operations?

For Lighthouse the closest dive ops are Altons and UDC. I think the biggest room for Lighthouse would hold three people (one double bed + one twin bed). If you want a room for 4 people, I don't think Lighthouse will cut it.

Highly recommend the Lighthouse both in quality and location.

    Utila Dive Operations?

If you are heading to Utila, then no reason to leave the airport at SAP. It is a small, modern airport with a small food court, ATMs and souvenir shops outside security. All flights (domestic and international) depart from the same terminal which has smaller food/drink offerings, a duty free...

    Flights to Utila

Alice @ Worldwide Travel is the Utila rep for CM Airlines. Morgan's Travel is the Utila rep for SOSA. I've booked CM through Morgan's before, but they have to get Alice to process the reservation on the back end. Between SOSA and CM, I prefer CM. My next trip down this winter I may end up...

    Roatan Airport new rules

I've not gone through RTB, but have done SAP on my way to Utila. Will be interesting to see if this process gets quicker...especially upon departure from SAP the lines to pay taxes with one or two people working is bad enough. I can't imagine adding another bottleneck to the process.

    Help Needed: Shady Dive Operator?

With all due respect, I don't think that is the question. Many shops subsidize the boat ride for divers who are taking classes, especially if the shop owns the boat. One shouldn't have to do market research and back into the numbers in order to determine the "real" price. If a shop tells me...

Sinking of the M/V Kinta at the Corpus Christi Nearshore Reef Site.

It seems a shame that it will be a "near shore" reef and I suspect conditions would be poor for diving. Near Corpus even the Liberty Ship reef is only 18 miles out. Don't know if any one has tried to dive it but I think that would be too close for good conditions barring an exceptional day.

CHUM Dives the Rigs - Sunday 8/3

CHUM is going out on Captain Beard's boat on Sunday 8/3 for a three tank trip to the rigs that dot the Gulf. We still have one spot available. We are hoping the relatively calm seas predicted for this week continue into the weekend. Cost is $250 per diver for the trip, not including tanks or...

    Dive Condition Reports

Mammoth Lake - Lake Jackson, TX - 7/19/2014 Choose to do one longer dive and explore the far side of the lake. Hoped the viz would be a little better and it may have been slightly, but overall conditions negatively impacted by a week of rain. Water was nice, about 86F down 'til thermocline...

    Pony Tank and Buoyancy/Trim

I dive wet with my AL19 and usually drop 1-2 lbs when carrying it. Also shifting a little weight to my right side to compensate for clipping it on my left. With an AL19 it is going to be slightly negative when full and essentially neutral when empty. That said, as others mentioned, we are...

    Utila charter flight rates?

If you can get into La Ceiba in time to make a ferry, I would do that instead of an air charter. Its going to be cheaper unless your group fills up the whole plane and time savings are negligible. If you are set on going the air route you might as well charter it from San Pedro Sula direct...

Packing List for Flower Garden Trip on the Fling

I assume you signed up through a dive shop? Sometimes the boat will take reservations directly but that is the rarity as I understand it. Either way, if solo, make it known to your trip leader or one of the DM on the boat and they will get you squared away with a buddy. As mentioned above...

Packing List for Flower Garden Trip on the Fling

There is not a lot of storage space, but there will be room for soft-sided bags underneath your bunk. Plan two bags - one for dive gear and another (duffel) bag for clothes/toiletries, etc. I typically bring/wear two pairs of shorts (one to get on/off the boat and a second pair to wear after...

    Dive Condition Reports

288 Lake, Houston, TX - Saturday 6/28/2014 Air temps 84F with surface conditions ranging from sun to rain showers. Recent rain in Houston has done nothing to help the conditions in the water. Viz was around 5' at the best and was down to around 1' in many areas. Hydrilla is encroaching a lot...
