My comment was based only on my personal experiences and conversations with other SSI students. I have training from SSI and PADI and the training I have had with PADI is head and shoulders above SSI. I have never had any SDI training but know instructors who switch from SSI to SDI.

From my experience I say do Rescue diver ASAP. Are you never going to need to help someone until you have a lot of experience? It may happen this afternoon and It may never happen but if something happens it is better to know what to do.
I had the same problem and NOTHING worked until I started using only the suit for buoyancy and only using the wing for floating on the surface. Once I learned how to control my buoyancy using the suit (two dives) I started also using the wing for some buoyancy control as well.
Use the suit for buoyancy until you are very comfortable with it then start using the bcd. Ditch the ankle weights. Dive in trim. Have proper weighting.
I have a Hollis 5.5 lbs backplate with a 1 lb STA and a 4 lbs P-weight in the backplate (attached with the STA bolts) right behind my back. I do not like cam band weight pockets.
