new diving regulations in Red Sea

IMHO, check dives often offer a much better insight of the diver's capabilites raather than just looking at the number of logged dives. Carrying an SMB and torch is not a bad idea. If they want to increase diver's safety- better keep control on boat operators that they have radios, life...

Problem with Light Cannon and NiMh batteries?

The HID bulbs do not operate like regular filament bulbs- There is a ballast that busts up the 12V (or 9.6) up to approx. 6000 Volts. So I don't think the reason you thought your lamp was brighter than your buddy's is because of amperage- most probably he wasn't using fresh batteries...

Where i have better chances to survive

When getting to the "relative safety" of 30m and switching to the deco mix, one can ask for assitance from the support team (a diver to watch and help in case one gets DCS symptoms, more breathing gas, 100% O2 to be used on the last stages and on boat, etc). I think it sums up to better...

Living at Altitude Diving at Sea Level

I posted a few weeks ago a link from a Jordanian decompression study of several cases, where people have been diving in Aqaba and got DCS while driving back home to Amman. I don't remember in which thread it was but I think you can search for "decompression and driving" and the forum's search...

Are all Suunto Vyper computers the same?

The difference is in the two pins in the bottom of the PC-interface socket. Old Vypers have fixed pins, new models have "springy" pins which make easier contact so one gets less time-out errors during download :-) Both models come in a few colors (gray/silver, black and I think that green too).

do you dive with spare mask

It can save someone's dive (yours, your buddy's or someone on the boat). If you are doing deco dives, a spare mask is a MUST. I don't see how one can make his deco stops without a mask. Well, the buddy can help you through the stops somehow, but you can never be 100% sure that you don't loose...

Advice needed for Suunto Vyper: switching from gauge to air modus impossible?

One last thing- I think it is a bad idea to use Suunto's simulator in order to "cut dive tables" from it. I don't think this is the appropiate use of this software. Suunto's SDM is just a cute software to see how the computer behaves, lets you get acquainted with the computer's behaviour with...

Advice needed for Suunto Vyper: switching from gauge to air modus impossible?

If you dive with a computer like Vyper, and managed to get the CEIL to something below 70'... well, I don't know when your birthday is, but you've got chances you'll be spending it UW still doing some deco stops :D , and seriously- to get a computer like Vyper to drop down it's ceiling so much...

Advice needed for Suunto Vyper: switching from gauge to air modus impossible?

Can you explain better why the computer goes "beserk" or does not allow you to do these dives? Although Suunto's computers do not have any integrated "deep stops" feature, they keep monitoring throughout the dive the nitrogen uptake. This includes everything that you do in your profile. If you...

Advice needed for Suunto Vyper: switching from gauge to air modus impossible?

    A 50m dive for 12 minutes. V-planner set on +2 conservatism and planned on air: DIVE PLAN Surface interval = 1 day 0 hr 0 min. Altitude = 0m Conservatism = + 2 Dec to 50m (2) on Air, 18m/min descent. Level 50m 9:13 (12) on Air, 1.25 ppO2, 50m EAD Asc to 18m (15) on...

Advice needed for Suunto Vyper: switching from gauge to air modus impossible?

or just rumors? Where have you heard aobut it? Anyway, O2 half time is considered to be 90 minutes, so if you don't do more than one deco dive per day, or wait about 7-8 hours between two deco dives, there shouldn't be a cns tox problem, isn' t it? I usually do deco dives planned with...

Advice needed for Suunto Vyper: switching from gauge to air modus impossible?

Vyper (and co.) is a great scuba computer. Period. I recommend it to any friend and scubadiver. It is not expensive (especially compared to Explorer, VR3 and friends). It is a relatively safe computer. Most divers don't do 5 deco dives a day and they don't spend 120 minutes in deco stops...

    Suunto Vyper & Vytec?

Just a tip: after you remove the protective cover, get a piece of broad, clear sellotape. Cut it exactly in the size of your computer's lcd display and genlty put it there. Try to avoid air bubbles. Now you can replace the clear protective cover. The sellotape will stay there for a long time...

    What Color .......

which respond to Green, Red and Blue (photon hit these cells and they react by generating electrical pulses to the brain, thus transforming light energy to chemical and electrical energy). Color perception is the result of a combination of the response of these cells to the light that hits them...

    Guide number for stobe(S) ?

True, most manufacturers lie or mislead about their strobe's GN (like in automobiles, who claim they'll do 100Km per liter, yeah, sure). What you can do is to "waste" one dive and a roll of 100ASA film. Get in the water, find a nice object where you can sit comfortable 1m (exactly) from it...

    more Eilat questions

Tower: 7-20m Bridge: 16-21m Bow --> stern: 21-22m Inner rooms: 16-26m Bottom arround ship: 25-27m So some parts are also allright for OW divers, others better for AOW. If one wants to go there beyond 27m, he should bring along at least a good shovel, some dinamite sticks, mining...

    more Eilat questions

Occasionally, one can meet dolphins everywhere in Eilat. However, you need some luck. In order to improve your chances to meed dolphins the best thing is to dive in the Dolphin Reef. Best time? Don't know. First thing in the morning sounds good to me. Just avoid the feeding hours, because you're...

    UW Laser Pointer?

IMHO, the ~30$ pointer should be enough for most things you'd like to do underwater. I don't see a reason why paying ~180$ for a green laser. I have two red laser pointers (20$ each, a year ago from LP)- very simple design no switch- only head rotation and it works fine, although during daytime...

    Why hydration?

However, in bubble dynamics, the radius of a bubble (from dissolved gasses in liquid) gets bigger with liquid density, including oils and several types of organic fats. From this, I can guess that dehydration may increase DCS risk (as well as excesive weight). Another thing that affects bubble...
