    Nitrox certification

Hope you don't mind a newer diver chiming in! I did SSI Open Water, and Nitrox I (32% only) was included as part of the course. We learned our MOD for 32% and we learned to respect it. I may take the full Nitrox course if I ever save enough to do a liveaboard trip . . . Our instructor had some...

    Two more dive physics problems

These are from the SSI Science of Diving final exam, yes? Wow, that was a toughie.

    What did you just say?

I'm not very experienced, but I do know that the instructor who said the following was full of "it" "As the air goes down into your lungs, into smaller and smaller volumes, it gets compressed, and more compressed, and then, BLAM! it turns into a liquid!" Dory

    Video: "Protecting Navy Divers"

Hi. I just watched a youtube video on US Navy Diving Medicine. And I figured out how to embed it here! 1TqYx5-HBEc In addidtion to the talk of medical research, there are some shots of a very cool mini-sub toward the end of the video (minute 8:30 or so). Cheers, Dory

Deep diving as a goal - the stigma.

I get it. And I like it. So would my instructor. He was all about self-control, diving as a martial art, staying on the path. I don't suppose that's anything new to most of you, but it gave me as a brand-new diver a solid base to work from, and a focus on what's more important. But I also...

John, thank you so much! That makes sense. I looked at your c.v. online at GUE and it's very impressive. Thanks again, Dory

    Advanced Hand Signaling

Please excuse a new diver asking (and I know this is an old thread), but I have a question about the "deco" signal that my instructor (recreational diving) couldn't answer. Maybe it's a silly question, but here goes . . . Does anyone know if there's a reason why the pinky finger (ASL "I"...

Is "the first rule of Scubaboard is that you don't talk about Scubaboard?"

I joined because my instructor listed it as one of more than a dozen online sources. All the others were sites on marine life, diving medicine, dive news, marine sciences, and local diving. I'm glad to be here, learning a lot! dory

Scuba Music (Songs, Artists, Albums that embody diving & diving culture)

I know what you mean. I'd like to have some a cappella choirs singing to me underwater. Like Russian men's choirs. One of my recent favorite works is O Magnum Mysterium. Would love to dive on a wreck in the dark with that playing! Dory

    Points of failure

This is very useful information to me as a new diver. Thank you! I have a question that didn't really get answered in my course. If you do your in-water buddy check and find small bubbles coming out from the valve-to-yoke connection (say a bit of dirt on the o-ring?) is it safe to dive anyway...

New diver wanting tips for things to focus on improving over summer

Nick, Hello! My mentor has me working on being able to stop moving altogether (hover). And finding my way back to the beach. And leading a dive briefing and the dive itself. He says that way the least experienced diver gets to try, get feedback, and improve much faster than just following the...

    analog air/nitrox gauge?

You mean a submersible pressure gauge (SPG)? I was taught that all modern ones are nitrox-compatible, at least up to 40% oxygen. My instructors all used the same gauges whether they were diving air or nitrox. And they didn't say that I needed a new gauge in my Nitrox class. But maybe I'm wrong...

Dive computers - what is Air integrated?

My Open Water Instructor had a similar computer, on his wrist, with the sending unit on his first stage. The sender (transmitter?) sampled the tank pressure and relayed that to his computer on his wrist. So it showed him everything my rental gauges and watch had: time, depth, remaining tank...

You know, with that guy--and that thing--no, the second thing.

I think this will work . . . http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fd1QytQoPMo I guess his instructor didn't tell him not to use his arms to swim . . .

So cool!!! The Art of Not Being Seen

Good link, thanks. I've seem some cuttlefish antics (off Manly Beach, near Sydney) that made me wonder whether or not I was having an acid flashback . . . -Dory
