Warner Beach diver dead - South Africa

Shocked & saddened; it's Dusan Stojakovic. Well known and well respected in the South African tech diving community. RIP.

Austrian diver fatality- Natal South Africa

Headline is sensationalist claptrap. It should rather read 'body recovered with bite marks'. Eastern Southern African coast is a shark diving paradise, with 1000s dives with just about all the apex critters, especially bulls & tigers, conducted without incident annually. It's far more likely -...

Opening a Halcyon can (of worms) ...

Anyway - I never did get round to opening the battery, though I did find out it is possible to do so in a non-destructive way. The problem I had appears to have been that there are three metal prongs on top of the battery that connect with a metal ring on the inside of the light connector. We...

Opening a Halcyon can (of worms) ...

It's out of warranty, so delivery costs (both ways) would be mine to carry, plus repairs. It'll probably cost about the same to replace. Also, there is a lot of PT involved in getting Lithium batteries into a courier bag. I want to try DIY before sending off for a new one.

Opening a Halcyon can (of worms) ...

A while ago I bought a Halcyon Focus; the battery has died, but because of the way in which it happened it seems due to a lose connection on the inside - has anyone successfully opened up this canister and re-sealed it so it remains workable? If so, any pointers on getting it done?

How many of you have had a dive computer fail?

My soon to be retired Galileo Sol has had two fairly severe failures, both occurring during a dive. The first happened when the computer was about 50 dives old and 20 minutes into a dive I realised that I had achieved unparalleled air consumption (it has wireless AI) - primarily because the...

Two divers dead on Aliwal Shoal, South Africa

There were rumours going around South African diving circles yesterday about the identity of one of the divers and it has subsequently been reported that it's Peter Timm - a fairly prominent local diver, most famous for discovering the coelacanths at Jessops Canyon at Sodwana. AFAIK it's the...

Where to dive in and around Sydney

I was sorry to miss you too, bowlofpetunias; partially because I wanted to use the opportunity to ask if your user name is a reference to the Hitchhikers Guide trilogy ...

Heading to Tofo and Protea for two weeks in April.

I have had awesome dives in both parts of the world at that time of year, so you would probably not be disappointed if you were to stick to your current plans. If I was to organise a similar excursion for myself I would try and get diving in some other spots too. So maybe reduce the Protea part...

Where to dive in and around Sydney

So thanks to the Aussie contingent for making me feel so welcome, especially Meggie66 and the Manly Prodive team, and I really enjoyed my too few Sydney dives. I hope I can reciprocate should any of you feel the need to get some diving done on this side of the world ...

Advice on diving a few days around Durban

It has been a while since I used any other operator in Umkomaas, but Oceanworx was pretty good and Aliwal Dive Centre has been recommended to me in the past. I think both offer packages that include accommodation but I have never stayed with either. The weekend of the 22nd is preceded by a...

Advice on diving a few days around Durban

I am not a Durban diver, but I've done a bit of diving on the KwaZulu Natal South Coast (where Durban and Umkomaas are located). At the moment the weather in the Eastern part of the country, including Durban, is pretty wet and it looks like it'll be that way for a little while. According to the...

Where to dive in and around Sydney

I like the idea of meeting up for a dive (or more); I'm in the process of finalising arrangements for the trip - as soon as that is done I'll be sending off some PMs. Cheers

Where to dive in and around Sydney

I'll be in Sydney for business at the end of March - the trip will be bookended by weekends there and if I get my scheduling right I'll probably have a day off during the week. I would like to get a few dives in and would be keen on getting recommendations on where and, probably more...

    How do YOU keep fit?

I've read and heard it said on a number of occassions that, as a rule of thumb, scuba should not be the most physically strenuous activity that a diver engages in. I do swimming, pilates, circuits & cardio in order to build fitness etc, and it does seem to work. I tend to get bored with...

What did you buy that you absolutely loved?

I actually like most of the equipment that I've bought, but I reckon the most important was the simultaneous acquisition of a Zeagle Scout BCD and one of their Primary & Octo reg sets. I use neither any more, but when I got those two pieces of equipment my mindset shifted from being a once a...
