    Snorkeling--Hawaii or Florida Keys?

I have done both in recent years but I much prefer Hawaii. I am on the east coast, hence the Keys trips. Hawaii is much better especially for someone just beginning. At many sites in Hawaii the reef is very close to shore. Your daughter can walk out and start off in water where she can stand...

Heading to Kona Hawaii October 7-14th.. Any suggestions on great dive trips?

Most of this information has been posted here before, but I will summarize a little: * Do the manta dive if at all possible * Most ops leave from Honokohou harbor. If you want to dive up north try either Kohala Divers (I like them) in Kawaihae or Blue Wilderness (in Waikoloa). Blue...

Missing Diver off of Kahala, Oahu, Hawaii

Sorry, I should have said "i can easily imagine...". I stopped ascending on the line for that reason. The moorings look like this: http://hawaii.gov/dlnr/dbor/rules/13-257.pdf (pg 5). The "foam filled subsurface float" is, from the outside, a big metal ball, covered in algae.

Missing Diver off of Kahala, Oahu, Hawaii

I my experience with multiple operators on the Big Island, yes (to guided dives without buddy pairs), no (to the buddy pair meshing -- the only pairs are folks who show up paired already). I don't know if the missing diver had a buddy. My speculation would be no. A typical dive charter for an...

Missing Diver off of Kahala, Oahu, Hawaii

After commenting and reading other comments here, I still have a bunch of questions. Can we answer (some of) these? They do overlap a bit. I don't expect anyone on IDH that day to comment (they will likely be called as witnesses in any litigation regardless of whether the missing diver is...

Missing Diver off of Kahala, Oahu, Hawaii

The purpose of this forum is to discuss accidents and try to find ways to be safer in the water. I, for one and as a non-local, learned some things that will change how I dive Oahu. It would be helpful to know where the facts posted in this forum are off base. If you choose not to contribute...

Missing Diver off of Kahala, Oahu, Hawaii

When you guys are quoting 10' waves is that Hawaii style? Most might not know that's a 20' wave elsewhere. Thats a big wave.

Missing Diver off of Kahala, Oahu, Hawaii

It sounds like this op has a lackadaisical attitude toward safety both from the fragmented incident description and Mikes firsthand experience. Thats a much bigger part of my problem with this than the simple fact they lost someone. Fatalities by themselves are too infrequent (thankfully) to do...

Missing Diver off of Kahala, Oahu, Hawaii

Damn this sucks. Assuming the missing diver managed to surface, he could be blown east toward Molokai or south/west with the trades. Having lived in SF I have plenty of respect for the Pacific but I didn't realise how confused the currents are off east Oahu. Non local dover, not familiar with...

Missing Diver off of Kahala, Oahu, Hawaii

Mike could you comment a little more on the site? How far offshore and what is the prevailing current if any? I ask since I have only dived HI on the Kona coast of the big island and the sites there are close to shore (50-200 yards by and large) and unless you are way down south, you aren't...

Oahu in January, any operator take people to see Hammerheads?

There was a juvenile at Puako Paniau this morning. Not in the water and no camera = no shot though.

Diving accident in Michigan claims Oak Harbor attorney

@don please reread my posr. Im advocating better buddy protocols on rec dives bcause im hythesizing that (some of the) incidents that are being viewed as "unresponsive diver -- rescuscitation failed -- cause of death drowning" are potential rescues that dont happen because it takes a few minutes...

    Where to go in Hawaii?!?

If you like a big boat and easy entry go with Kona Honu. I was gonna dive with friscuba this trip but he had nibody else for the day I planned. Up north Kohala Divers from Kawaihae runs nice charters to sites others dont hit. Theres more coral up north although the critters and fish are the big...

Diving accident in Michigan claims Oak Harbor attorney

@reefraff. Agree with yoir points. Certainly the tech diving community is better at incident analysis and that part of the process will be worked through. My comment about buddy separation was more in reference to rec divers - who (generally, not all) are more nonchalant about buddy protocols...

Diving accident in Michigan claims Oak Harbor attorney

@Bob - This dive is certainly way beyond my training and from your description I imagine the respinse was as good as it could be and the depth was just too much of an added complication. It is good to hear that your boats have AEDs. My experience is all warm water. I'm wondering if cardiac...

    Where to go in Hawaii?!?

There will be whales right off the Kohala coast of the BI too (and whale poo all over the bottom). With that group size you will probably need multiple houses. Figure about 1500-2500/wk/house for 6 people per house. Book soon, and be sure to reserve your car now. There was a major car...

    Where to go in Hawaii?!?

I can attest the big island is also pretty kid friendly. On the other hand it's big so you may do more driving here. It might help to know how big your group is, what your budget is, and if you want hotel rooms or a condo or house?

Diving accident in Michigan claims Oak Harbor attorney

And stay close to your buddy. If you have a MI, survival curves say you need cpr or an aed within 10 minutes or your chances are in the single digits. Looking at these numbers makes me think the unresponsive diver protocols overly emphasize controlling ascent rate to limit AGE and DCS...

    Could this be DCS?

At any point did you get a chest x-ray? I used to think you couldn't embolize or get pneumothorax skin diving but while swimming I got some water up nose while flip turning and reflexively blew out and pinched nose (in sim goggles not face mask) at the same time. As I floated up I could feel...

    Kona diving and helicopters

I have not done the heli ride but Halemaumau is about 3700 ft so even if they flew the long way around Mauuna Loa you would still hit 4000 fet or so. Consult NOAA tables but I would expect no.
