    Advice on Scubapro regs: Mk25 EVO/D420 vs MK19 EVO/ D420

I dive in waters that have a fair amount of sand and debris, so I use a Mk19 (with a D350) because of the superior sealing. Otherwise, there is no qualitative difference between the two first stages you are considering. Both are excellent, tough as nails, and will perform brilliantly.

    Why do divers eat seafood?

It's not just fish. It's an overcrowded world with too many people polluting the oceans, building cities, clearing forests, building on shorelines, fishing with dynamite and chemicals, covering the land with man-made structure, creating mountains of garbage, filling the seas with plastic...

    Why do divers eat seafood?

The real problem is that there are far too many people in the world. We are destroying the planet with our insatiable appetites, consuming or destroying almost everything as our numbers grow to once unimaginable levels. I'm an old man, old enough to remember well the planet when there were about...

Sometimes the night dive just gets weird...

Psychedelic psylocibin mushrooms are legal in Jamaica. Some resorts now offer them to their customers as part of a package arrangement. I was able to legally buy 'magic mushrooms' there decades ago at certain restaurants and shops. Very nice.

    Non Diving DCS Death

A number of sandhog workers were killed by decompression sickness while building the Holland Tunnel connecting NJ and NYC. The tunnel was completed in 1927. DCS hits and deaths were not uncommon during deep underwater tunnel construction back in the day, before the risks were fully understood...

    Experience from night Divers

Most of my night diving and all of my solo night diving is from shore, shallow inlets, jetties, etc., so it's not much of a task. The structure makes it pretty easy. I enjoy the solitude, the starlight on the surface, the wonderful bioluminescence. Alone, it's a form of meditation.

    Experience from night Divers

I love diving at night. When I was a kid I dived for lobster at night with a big Allen Light, never had a problem. Just one fright when I put my hand down on a huge goosefish while peering under a jetty wall. Lots of different things to see at night, creatures that stay hidden during the day.

“Duty of Care” when taking others on personal vessel, to dive

Although it was many years ago, I was able to purchase medical grade oxygen for transporting marine reef fishes from the Caribbean to the states.

“Duty of Care” when taking others on personal vessel, to dive

The FDA considers pure Oxygen a prescription drug requiring a health care script before dispensing for medical purposes. It appears that its use for diving is not considered medical purpose, though it is obviously used for divers in distress.

My snorkel came in handy on two occasions when a small, unmanned dive boat drifted away.

    For all You Advanced Snorkelers

The simplest snorkel is the best snorkel. Optimally large bore, simple tube, excellent materials, comfortable mouthpiece, no bells or whistles. I've been snorkeling since Harry Truman was president (really), and that's my experience.

    Dive operator age limits?

Perhaps my mistake was calling ahead and asking if there was a problem with me being over 80. At 70 I generally had no problems.

“Duty of Care” when taking others on personal vessel, to dive

I wonder how many private boat owners carry liability insurance on their boats, and for those who do, how many policies exclude things like scuba diving from the boat.

“Duty of Care” when taking others on personal vessel, to dive

The bottom line is that all of these remedies require paying a lawyer to argue your case. Realistically, an individual cannot get dismissals on their own. There is no reasonable way for an individual to seek justice even when the complaint is absurd, and getting compensated for expenses after a...

Question Could you sleep in an overwater bungalow with no A/C?

I once stayed for two weeks at a cabin suspended over a cliff 40 feet above the water in Dominica. No air conditioner, no fan, no screens. It was glorious. My little kitchenette looked out over miles of open sea. Nothing like scrambling eggs while a couple of whales splashed a mile offshore. At...

    Dive operator age limits?

Two operations in the Keys when I was down there two years ago in March, the month I turned 80. I'd rather not get involved in naming names on a public board. I called, they dithered a bit, eventually said no, their prerogative. I went elsewhere.
