You just confirmed what I wrote in my post, so thank you Zrxdiver. Most dive pros acting in the capacity of DM (or dive guide) on Oahu are at a minimum OWSIs, but that's not really the point. The point is divers on a guided dive got separated from the group and at least two of them were lucky...
Halemano: I'll PM you about diving regulations/oversight as I don't think I was clear in what I was asking, and it's pretty fair outside the scope this particular thread.
Everyone else: Today was my first day back in the water since last Sunday (stupid real job) and the unconfirmed reports on...
Helemano: For some reason I was under the impression that recreational diving wasn't under the auspices of OSHA/Commercial diving... you mind providing a link?
Michael
Assuming this is true, does it make it right to splash divers? Are you defending the practice of putting tourist divers into high seas and strong currents as business as usual?
As far as I can tell most people were highly appreciative of your first post (it's good to know the viz, and that the...
Ellis:
I respect most of your posts, but you stepped in it on this one. Take a look at Oya's first post on this thread. I know him personally, and I know his diving skill. If he says conditions were bad enough he would have scrubbed the dive I have no reason to doubt his reasoning. This being...
Shoots Bob, at least he responded to you. ;) My carefully composed thoughts about my own issues with my Oxycheq gear were deleted within about 15 minutes of being posted!:shocked2:
I will buy my next wings (for the wife and I) from DSS. In fact I like Tobin's approach to both product...
K Ellis:
Almost all dives from boats with tour operators on Oahu are guided dives. I certainly can't state that this one was, but it would be outside the normal practice here if it wasn't a guided dive. Obviously since I wasn't there I can't speak to this particular case.
Michael
John, actually this has caused me to engage in quite a bit of self reflection. Both about how I lead dives and what gear I will take with me when I do so. My personal economic reality is that at the moment I cannot afford a PLB, and yet must continue to lead dives in order to afford one, so for...
On the original subject at hand: Search Resumes For Missing Diver - Honolulu News Story - KITV Honolulu
Summary: USCG called off search, Hawaii Fire Department continues to search, One fin, possibly the missing diver's found.
Michael
I dunno Thal, perhaps it's my background in nuclear power, but I've always found in root cause analysis it's always been possible to point to specific errors that caused a critiqueable incident.
I'll defer to your years of experience, but can you please provide some examples?
Michael
I'll go one step further: rather then say a diver dying is inevitable I'd say the reality is if a diver dies someone screwed up. Might be the diver, might be the operator, but I'm with Thal on this one, there are no unavoidable fatalities in diving, every single one can be traced back to error...
Gosh Melon, your first and thus far only post is a personal attack? Excuse me if I don't take your criticisms too seriously.
If you were there tell us what happened? If not, well, at least tell us how my analysis and opinions are boneheaded? They might be wrong, but if you're at all familiar...
This is a complete and utter thread high-jack, but I just started working for a dive shop who is an Aqua-Lung dealer and I've been unsure on whether or not to start switching over my gear. Based purely on the fact Tom is responding to people's questions in a literate non-confrontational manner...
Most recent article I could fine: Scuba divers with various ocean sports companies help search... - Hawaii News Now - KGMB and KHNL Home
From the article:
"Other ocean sports providers based out of Koko Marina say this is a company's worst nightmare, and that you quickly learn in this...
Pliny: Somewhere on these boards is a fantastic thread about how the USCG uses information about the victim to inform their search patterns (obviously they also consider the ocean conditions too). The gist of the thread was that if they know you have a specific piece of safety gear they use...
Isurus9: what's your source? From the initial reports I read there was no mention of the length of time it took to discover the diver missing (but it was implied it was almost instant once people surfaced) but then later today you have the report on HPR's noon broadcast about the hour delay and...
Pliny: This is one of the few dive sites on Oahu I don't have a lot of personal experience at, so I'm going from looking at maps and the news reporting, but from shore (my wife works near where the incident took place) you can easily see the S&R boats, so I'd say approximately one mile off...
Hawaii Public Radio just reported it took one hour for the dive company to realize they had a missing diver. I'm searching for a link to that story as we speak (heard it while driving).
Michael
I'm only going to post the link to the news story for now, will post more as soon as I have more details.
