Culebra, PR - Day trip out of Fajardo, or ferry to Culebra first.

Read the thread about catching the ferry. The ferry ride is about an hour and a half each way. That's also why it's a full day for a 2 tank dive out of Fajardo (although the dive boat probably makes it there in less than an hour and a half). I believe the Casa trip includes lunch on a beach...

    Diving Puerto Rico

Casa del mar is a good shop out of Fajardo. Scuba Puerto Rico | Scuba Diving Puerto Rico | Dive Puerto Rico | Casa del Mar Dive Center They are located at the Conquistador Hotel there.

    Dive Ops in Puerto Rico

I went out with Casa del Mar in Fajardo over Christmas. They were great. Christmas 2010 I dove with West Divers in La Parguera. The were good too. I'd dive with either of them again. As Bhtmec said, Fajardo is closer, but take a look at the conditions. If its rough in Fajardo, it might be...

    Swim test

Scuba-noob got it right. You said you were "by no means a non-swimmer". Just parctice a bit. You'll be surprised at how fast you can work your way up to 200 meters. And, as a bunch of others said...take your time.

Can people really get scuba certified without knowing how to swim?

I'm not sure where the test was actually removed from the courses. It was included in my PADI OW course and the instructor gave the class the option to just swim or do MFS. I've pulled a few people out of the ocean myself, and some of them did get in trouble because they thought they were...

    Revisiting the issue of "fitness"

Lots of good suggestions in this thread. If you are joining, or already belong to a gym or fitness center, just tell one of the trainers what you're aiming to do. Heck one of them might be a diver and will have a hands on understanding of what you need to do. They'll usually suggest...

Can people really get scuba certified without knowing how to swim?

From Rtee: Um.... yes, by my definitions...that's why I used phrases like "my thoughts", "in my book", and "just my opinion". Yes,exactly. In case you fall off the boat or have some other situation where you find yourself in the water without equipment.

Can people really get scuba certified without knowing how to swim?

I agree with Jill and will add my own thoughts. Although new to diving, I've been swimming all my life. I was a competitor when I was young (not olympic), a lifeguard both at pools and on the ocean, taught swimming, played water polo, and still swim for fun and exercise. All that background...

Can people really get scuba certified without knowing how to swim?

Interesting thread. My own opinion is that if you're going to participate in any water sport regularly, you owe it to yourself to learn to swim proficiently. This is a common sense matter of safety. Certifying agencies no doubt include the swim test as part of the class for that reason, to...

Casa del Mar Dive Center, Fajardo, PR, Trip Report December 24, 2011

Casa Del Mar part II - I was able to get back to Casa Del Mar on 12/27. We had a beautiful day, much calmer seas (2 ft swells, no white caps) and much improved visibility. The folks at Casa loaded us on "Day Off" again. We had 2 groups of certified divers and a class working on certification...

Casa del Mar Dive Center, Fajardo, PR, Trip Report December 24, 2011

I'll second JLevine's (great meeting you!)review of Casa Del Mar. They were great. We had a beautiful day… except for the 16 mph steady wind and the 3-4 ft chop. And these were the improved conditions! Casa did a great job, they really tried to get us in the water. They even went down...

Dive Buddies in San Juan PR area

I'm sitting in Rio Grande right now looking at a grey and wild sea. Just had my dive cancelled for tomorrow. May be time for a road trip to Guanica or Rincon.

Boats that accomodate both snorkelers and divers

Bummer, we just got blown out for tomorrow. The weather is not good in PR this week at least not in the Rio Grande and Fajardo region. We were also cancelled for a boat tour to Vieques tomorrow night. Is anyone down on the southwest (La Parguera) area diving this week? How about Rincòn?

Boats that accomodate both snorkelers and divers

Question. I am trying to put together a dive trip out of Fajardo PR for Christmas week that will allow my daughter and I to dive and my son and wife to snorkel. Both Casa del Mar and Sea Ventures say that can do this. Is that kind of trip common, and what is the general opinion of that plan...

Dive Buddies in San Juan PR area

We're going to be diving at least once out of Fajardo sometime between the 21st and 29th. We're still planning. Since Christmas is on a Sunday it most likely won't be a weekend though. I'll let you knwo when we go. I have a question about diversand snokelers on the same trip which I'll post...

    Visiting April 2010

The diving in PR is off the west, east and southern shores. There used to be a shore diving opportunity with a group called Scuba Dogs that had an operation right in San Juan at the Escambron public beach. Looking at thier web page it appears they no longer do that, but you could call and see...

    San Juan April 2012

You should check out the Greater Antilles forum, thats where most of the Puerto rico discussions are found. But right in San Juan there is a group called Scuba Dogs that does shore diving Scuba Dogs Inc. - Visión They are shallow dives, but you can take a cab to Escambron which is right in...

    Possibly moving to Puerto Rico

Correction. I did anoher look at unemployment. Between 2001 and 2011 it ran between 9.5% and 17.5%. So the current 15.1% is on the high side.
