    Trimix Cylinder Buoyancy

Hi all, Starting to move into Trimix and I'm finding that Ali80's are really floaty even when full. So I'm thinking about steel for when I'm using trimix. Does that make sense to people? What are others experience.

    SMS 50 with steels

My thought process was that if you're weighting yourself properly you'd wear enough weight so that you're just about neutral in the water with no cylinders on. The amount you need varies with body type, obviously. Once you're at that point, and you add the cylinders, it will make everybody the...

    SMS 50 with steels

Surely you're both weighting yourselves to be the same buoyancy in the water (i.e. neutral), so why does it matter if you've got a "fat butt" or not?

    Suggestions for bolt snap removal

What exactly is it you're finding difficult? Getting your hand to the clip? Opening it? Getting it off the rail? Are you wearing gloves? Certainly I don't particularly like those butterfly clips. Easy to put on but can be tricky to get purchase on when you try to open them, especially if...

Sidemount Harness Webbing - Anyone tried lightweight/crotch-strap material?

It was. Metal not plastic too. There just wasn't anything to get the teeth into. The surface was much smoother. Your milage may vary.

Sidemount Harness Webbing - Anyone tried lightweight/crotch-strap material?

I tried soft webbing once. Biggest problem was that I couldn't get a D-ring to stay put unless it was sewn in. A normal tri-slide just couldn't get enough purchase. It also tended to get tangled when I wasn't wearing it.

    Single or Dual bladder

Dual bladder does have it's own draw backs, the main one being that its another thing to check, service, etc and make sure it's working. I doubt most people really check the second bladder until they need it. Then there's the extra hose routing, and clutter associated with it. So how is a...

Bolt Snaps - Butt Plate - Big Clumsy Fingers

I use snap shackles on the rear... Take a little bit of getting used to, but require no strength to open / close

'Open Water' only sidemount BCDs: Your opinions?

So I've been thinking about this a bit more and looking at the rigs again. I still see no reason an LPI needs to be at the top for open water. I can be in whatever trim works in open water, but I do think only being able to dump gas from the bottom of the wing in restricted environments is a...

'Open Water' only sidemount BCDs: Your opinions?

It doesn't make sense to me either. Nothing about having an LPI down low stops me using it in open water as long as I'm familiar with that concept. Yes, I'd want to be horizontal to dump air from it, but in sidemount that's normally the most comfortable way to be. If I'm on a shot line I'm...

    Sidemount to get into tech.

Gas theory is gas theory, regardless of how you take your gas with you. So from that point of view it doesn't matter who you do courses with, but I think I've learnt more in the water with instructors than I have in the classroom. All those little tips and tricks that you pick up won't mean as...

    Sidemount to get into tech.

Somebody who doesn't dive SM can not teach SM. You need to have experience of what you're teaching. Otherwise you're paying someone to teach you things they've just made up on the spot.

Standard rental cylinders - right-tank valve in or out?

Valve-in. I'm not going to have to manipulate both valves at the same time (i.e. manifolded shutdown), so I can always use my left / both hands.

    Teach me warm weather weighting

Thanks everyone for the examples. I just got back last night from Cyprus having had 6 great dives on the Zenobia. Everyone came back safe and sound although we did have some unwanted excitement having to take Ian, our host, to the hospital. He trapped his finger catching a tank that slipped...

Signalling air remaining when diving with single tank divers.

I'm surprised I haven't seen this, but if I'm diving 2 tank side-mount in a recreational situation, where most people are diving single tanks, I signal a single figure. I treat the 2 tanks as one, and just average out the numbers. That would then be a similar figure to what I'd be signalling if...

    Teach me warm weather weighting

Is that per tank? OK, sounds like my initial assumption of them being neutral was causing me to go heavy. That makes more sense now. The couple of sites I found that had buoyancy numbers on for Ali80s didn't seem to add up to neutral tanks. More like 3-4lbs negative once rigged which would...

:) thanks Joey, but I'm already booked for this trip. Will keep you in mind for next time though.

    Teach me warm weather weighting

Hi all, So I've got a little trip planned :D. A long weekend down to Cyprus to spend a few dives diving the Zenobia (Zenobia Shipwreck Diving Larnaca Cyprus). I did 6 dives on it last year on a back-mounted single steel 15l (HP120) + little 3l backup (20cuft or so), and it's a cracking dive...

Easiest Way to Dive 2 Separate Tanks?

At that sort of depth you're going to have to be down for a LONG time to hit NDLs. The double cam bands I mentioned : CAMBANDSBuddy Twinning Bands - Divernet ...but shore diving (I hadn't realised) I'd really be side-mounting. Two tanks on your back are heavy, and I'd rather move stuff about...

Easiest Way to Dive 2 Separate Tanks?

Much the same sort of rate as me. I'm a big chap with big lungs. I use more air. Fair enough. I can understand that. What would you say your max depth tends to be, and how long do you stay down there? Do you want to do this so you can go deeper, stay longer, what? I ask because you need to be...
