I've wondered about diving the coast myself, but have not liked the prospect of prepping for a dive weekend, driving all that way and then getting blown out. Is this more a myth or really something to consider?

I would also recommend Bimini. The Big Game Club is a marina hotel and Bimini Undersea is right there with their compressor next to the docks. Air fills are $8 - I don't consider this outrageous - they are providing air fills on a remote island! People lose site of what it costs to function...

sandman98007, hearing that you need 100lbs of lift in a wing seems to be a stock answer here in the PNW. Sometimes there exists the bigger is better mentality, go figure. I dive steel doubles and use a 59lb wing, my back up wing is a 51lb wing, which works.
